Is anybody in control of these "bounty hunters" or do they just do whatever they please?

Bounty hunters mistakenly target Phoenix police chief's house

Eleven bounty hunters from two fugitive-recovery companies, including the owners, went to the northwest Phoenix home of Phoenix Police Chief Joseph Yahner on Tuesday night after receiving false information that a fugitive was hiding there, according to police.

Brent Farley, 43, owns Northstar Fugitive Recovery in Mesa and was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct as a result of the incident, police said.

Phoenix police officers were called at about 10 p.m. Tuesday about a disturbance at the chief's residence, according to law enforcement.

When officers arrived, they found employees from Northstar and Delta One Tactical Recovery surrounding the home, with one man banging on the door with an unholstered weapon and in a verbal confrontation with the chief inside, police said. Their vehicles were parked on the property with their lights shining and the man at the door shined his flashlight inside, Phoenix police said. A cellphone video captured part of the altercation.

Several employees were armed with handguns, and police said they are in the process of serving a search warrant for these weapons.

The employees said they were looking for a wanted fugitive from Oklahoma who they were told via social media was at the residence, according to law enforcement. The fugitive's name was not released but is a 6-foot-3 Black man who weighs 310 pounds and was wanted on drug charges, police said. Officers who arrived on the scene immediately told the bounty hunters that the residents of the house in no way matched the description of the fugitive and told them to leave, according to law enforcement.

Investigators are looking into the source of the unconfirmed tip as well as if the companies committed any weapons violations.
