Let's see, at my high school: pot, coke, mushrooms, acid and the worst killer of all, alcohol. Had zero tolerance been enforced, no one would have graduated and the world would have been deprived by many dozen productive and upstanding citizens.
Shameful lack of proportion.

My heart goes out to the parents. Though it would be mean nothing, I hope they sue and principal loses his job for being a monster.

I agree, the school administration did what they had to do but the comment about him ruining his life was stupid and unnecessary. He was probably surrounded by adults who told him he had to be perfect and infallible in order to be worth a damn. And judging by some of the comments here, some of these posters feel the same way.

People make mistakes, especially 16-year old boys. If our lives were ruined for every single mistake we made when we were 16 would any of us be here right now?

This is an excellent point. I do not blame the school for taking action. To clarify my position I don't think it's OK for a 16 year old student to show up at a school function stoned. I just think it is wrong to portray it as a life altering mistake.
