The World Health Organization said Monday that eating processed meat such as sausages and ham causes cancer, while unprocessed red meat may also be carcinogenic.
The WHO's cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon, or colorectal, cancer.
The report outlined that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day -- the equivalent of two slices of ham -- can increase the risk of such cancer by 18%. However, the authors say the risks are relatively small to begin with.
Here we go again! Another guilt-trip for the First World -- courtesy of the self-righteous egalitarians who seek to impose their beliefs on everybody else.
Oh, honestly!! Too much sun can cause cancer. Driving (or even crossing the street) can kill you. Eating hard candy can kill you (if you choke on it).
If people want to be too scared to do anything or eat anything, that is up to them, but I personally am not going to live my life being afraid of everything I might digest or do.
Btw, three out of my four grandparents lived to be over 90, and they were all from Pennsylvania Dutch country where processed meat could almost be considered a separate food group!

One of the major problems with processed meats is the sodium. I don't eat processed meats very often, but I usually have one package of cold cuts in my freezer if I just need a quick sandwich. Right now there's a package of bologna in there. It says 1 serving equals only 10% of your daily sodium intake. Not bad. If you think a real serving of bologna in a sandwich is 1 and a half slices of bologna. Most people would make a sandwich that would -- by itself -- account for 40% of the day's recommended intake of sodium. Far more sodium than a normal serving of salted potato chips.

The point is (at least to me), all things in moderation.
Not long before my father died they had to put him in the hospital for a few days due to dehydration and other issues where his blood panels were way out of whack. The doctor asked him to describe his daily eating. Usually a cold cut sandwich for lunch and a Stouffers entree for dinner. As soon as he stopped that routine the dehydration ended and his blood panels got back to normal. It didn't mean never eat cold cuts, and it didn't mean never eat Stouffers. Just not as a steady died.
Even tonight I'm planning on just having a bowl of soup for dinner. That will be 40% of a day's sodium...and the can is labeled "heart healthy".
The big problem is many American will have a breakfast sandwich with processed meats, then red meat or something processed for lunch and more processed foods for dinner, so they have a constant diet of processed foods and are shocked as to why there is so much cancer in this country.
But you can eat healthy and get hit by a drunk driver, so you just cant win.
