Jesus was born in the spring according to Theology experts.
I was talking about the date that Jesus' birthday is celebrated--which, you're right, is unlikely to have been in December/January. I believe the early Christians had actually pinned the date to some time in April/May...but the early Christians also did not celebrate birthdays at all, Jesus' or anyone else's.
That's true, she didn't teach ABOUT God, in my Opinion. However, in the supposed English lesson, she did teach that God may not exist at all, which to many people would be less acceptable than teaching ABOUT God, I Assert. The Fact is, teacher made a bad mistake.
OMG, ALL common assertions refer to a belief. I give up, it's you guys who don't get it. Dr. Wayne Dyer once said "If you go around looking for reasons to be offended, you will certainly find them" and I find this thread to be exactly that. You guys seem to be actively trying to twist this into a reason to find offense.
Given the school district's response, most posts here, and the poll results, I don't think it's me who doesn't get it...
The teacher needs to teach facts not what she believes. If she cant prove it's true then she shouldn't be able to teach it. This is miles above her pay grade.
This teacher sucked at writing the assignment because she chose an example that didn't belong there. Religion is personal, it's a personal opinion and you have the freedom to make your choice in the matter. Unlike choosing whether or not the cheetah is the fastest land animal. She should have stuck to things that we can observe. She can not tell a student they are wrong for saying God is real. She has no authority to say that is a fact because she has no evidence that can be observed.

Exactly....which is what differentiates it from provable fact.
The teacher never said that anyone's BELIEF was incorrect, just that when critically reading and writing, that statement "there is a God" (any God by the way, the question didn't specify a Christian God), would be categorized as a common assertion, since it cannot be proven (or disproven).
I think that is so condescending. Until someone can prove to me that God isn't real, our beliefs (atheist vs religious) really aren't that much different or superior to one another. FWIW I identify as Catholic but am not too religious. I question things myself but I don't act like I'm smarter or know better. Just my opinion.
I have no problem with atheists. I have a problem with atheists who act condescending and smarter than the religious and make rude flippant comments like I so often see here on CD. And I have no problems with the super religious, until they start acting like the Duggar family or someone in ISIS or al Qaeda and taking it too far.
The burden of proof is always on the one making the claim. If you claim God is real, then the burden is on YOU to prove it.

Popularity doesn't make anything more real than the rock god.

The First Amendment separation of Church and State is VERY real, and since it is in the Constitution, it is the supreme law of the land ...
