I was under the impression that the Federal Government was already full of crooks.

Yes, you paid your debt to society. No, that doesn't mean that your criminal records should be forever hidden from public view.
Do you understand that the alternative is that we pay them for the rest of their lives? if they can't get a job, that's the option. Why not give someone a chance to rebuild their lives? The way it is now a 5 year sentence is basically a lifetime sentence. How does that serve any of us?
People here are so enamored with the idea of revenge and punishment that we can't see the forest for the trees.

Also they are not exempt from the background check, so your fear-mongering that we will have NO IDEA if the guy driving your kids to school is a mass murderer or not! is utterly ridiculous.

It's also only for Federal jobs.

Hmm...I get the whole things about the box making it impossible for many people to get a fresh start after serving time, but couldn't this be handled on the back end though? Allow the box, but add stricter limits to what will be divulged by the government in a background check. That way ex cons will have less circumstances where they are required to check that deal ending box without taking away an employer's ability to find out important information before going too far in to the process.

There are a lot of people with past minor drug possession offenses. With states legalizing the use of marijuana, the box in its current form is obsolete unless you can expunge their criminal history. Employers still have enough information on the application that they can do an automated background check. Some proposals go farther and ban pre-interview background checks.

You can still rebuild your life with a criminal record. It may be harder, but it can be done.

It has zero to do with "revenge and punishment". It's about protecting people. The rest of society has a right to know if they're at risk by working with a sociopath.

There is still going to be a background check, don't be dense. It will just allow the person to get into an interview and make his case versus having his application tossed in the trash the second he walks out the door.

Are people actually this?

And nothing in this bill would prevent that. You guys, your blind hatred of anything Obama does is making you sound foolish, at least read the article/watch the video so you're not talking out of your a**.

This sounds to me like another government edict that is just playing to the crowd. So an applicant is not screened up front, if the job requires a clean criminal record, the applicant will just get screened later. The hope that the interviewer will be so swayed with the applicant that s/he will ignore their requirements is a bit disingenuous.

If a program could be started where criminal records could be expunged following some guidelines, then the stated goals could be achieved. It is not only lack of jobs but ex-cons have difficulty getting housing too.

I am afraid "ban the box" is just politics and will make no difference. Unfortunately, no one cares.

Take a chill pill.

This doesn't matter in the least. As an employer, you would be a total & complete idiot if you didn't do background checks on everyone that you're interviewing or hiring. I worked in DER for local government. Every single person who passed a civil service exam for a position and was being put on an eligible list, we did background checks on. Then, we had a panel of 3 people who would review any convictions and criminal complaints & determine if the conviction was considered job related to the position they applied for. If so, they were rejected. Our applications were revised a few years ago & the check box for whether they had been convicted or not and also the space to write down said convictions had been eliminated. Didn't matter that it was no longer on the application, every single potential employee had a background check done. So people, quit your whining. OBAMA!!!! You should be doing background checks on everyone. You're completely stupid if you don't.

Vice Went To Prison With Obama. Now It's Going Deep Into Inmate Issues.
Would one seriously mark the box? How dumb would that be in the first place. Are you saying people in prison are honest hard working people, just looking for a break?
Have you ever known someone in prison and been around them when they get out?

Why are you willing to give them FEDERAL jobs? You act like this is working at a fast food place, why not hire them for fast food worker, start at the bottom like the rest of us!

On the other hand, Obama has no right or business from telling private employers what they can do or not do.
So now, on good behavior they get a federal job and our college youth get to wash dishes or apply at McDonalds?
