This seems like science fiction horror movie but it's real. The Amoeba lives in muddy water in warm stagnant lakes. We have had some get it here in Arizona where reservoirs water temps hit 90's in the shallow water.
The first time I heard about this amoeba, I was so grateful it didn't happen to my kids. This was several years ago, and a child caught it in the Lake Havasu area. My brats had been splashing around in the warm banks of the Colorado in Laughlin the month before I read about it.
Nose clips are definitely in order if splashing around in warm fresh water is happening.
