Pet owner explains why he shot his own dog, buried her at the beach - CBS News

Anyone who has a dog who is sick/suffering/near end of life knows the gut wrenching decision involved in all of this. While I can maybe see a weapons charge involved in shooting a gun in a public spot if that's applicable/I don't know, I don't agree with the animal cruelty charge as reading the details, it sounds like the animal would have had a prolonged period of suffering and then died. And the vet previously suggested euthanizing the dog.

I saw this story also. From what I can tell, the only thing he did wrong was to bury the dog at a public beach in a shallow grave.

A single shot was probably instantaneous death. There are a lot of unnecessary costs associated with a vet euthanasia. I know when I had to have my cat put down ten years ago, I got charged an exam fee of $50 on top of other costs although I had expressly gone to the vet to have her euthanized. The dog didn't know what a gun was and it didn't matter. The death was an act of compassion from a loving owner.

How sad. I think that the dog owner did the best thing for his dog. I'm sure it was a heart wrenching decision and one that he relives in his mind every day.

I agree with Sarahsez that the only thing that he did wrong was bury his dog in a shallow grave on the beach. The rest I see as an act of compassion for his dog that he loved.

Here's hoping the charges get dropped.

I don't have a problem with using a firearm to euthanize a dog (though I suspect that a fairly significant number of yahoos are too clueless and/or inept to do so in a manner that results in instant death).

But ... don't bury your pet carcass on a public beach.

I just actually had to euthanize my lame horse at the vet yesterday, it wasn't great. I actually did look for someone to do it with a gun for various reasons, but there was no one I would deam as being properly qualified as close by. I don't know much about shooting dogs, but I assume it's the same effect with instant death if done correctly. I don't see ending an animals suffering as cruelty ever as long as done with the right intentions which it sounds like this guy did, even if it doesn't go exactly as hoped for.
Nothing more than incorrect disposal of an animal carcass which I would guess is just a very minor offence.

If he could not get the dog to the hospital because he had no help how did he get it to the beach?? If the paw was sticking out of the sand he did not make much of an effort in burying the dog.
