And if, indeed, they might be innocent, then delaying their day in court to prove it--leaving them for months or years in jail or with a legal sword over their heads--is certainly an injustice.

"Justice delayed is justice denied."
Thank you and I repped the post.

Where you and I may agree is that cheap, cheesy rhetoric against immigrants should be replaced by staffing the immigration courts in an adequate manner. If a deportation is to happen it should happen within a short enough time that the person still has a life in their homeland. If they deserve to be here they shouldn't live in the shadows. Politicians often advocate easy, rhetorical solutions for that need old-fashioned resources.

And the same applies to ordinary criminal courts for the reasons Ralph_Kirk explained rather well.

As for the Ossining High School student he was not a criminal. My point there is that a much-delayed deportation seems more harsh than anything. I am not saying it is wrong.

Overall my point is that justice really needs to be meaningfully prompt.
If he is here illegally, he is committing a crime. That makes him a criminal. Delayed deportation while harsh is necessary to curb and discourage this practice.

Got it, and I agree that justice delayed is justice denied for the case you illustrated. If it is served, better late than never.

I know for many who have posted here, they will probably say they don't care but I wonder if for some others, their opinion would be different if she had actually killed him, which , even with a relatively 'small' thump, is entirely possible?

I once saw the aftermath of a guy hit by a car entering a driveway at no more than 5mph. Sent him over the hood, his head hit the pavement and his skull split like a cantaloupe.

I have zero tolerance for thieves. People work hard for what they have only to have some scum bag come along and take what they have? She should have shot him in his ass.

Yeah because pulling out and shooting a gun in a busy public area is *such* a good idea...

I think maybe these people who think taking the law into their own hands is such a good idea ought to make room for the fact that some of us who don't believe in that may sit on the jury that judges them.

I believe the system, however imperfect, was created because a civilized society cannot have people acting as their own judge, jury, and executioner. If I sat on the jury of someone who had done this I would not hesitate to convict them. If they cannot obey the law because it is the law, they should make room for people like me who would send them to jail in the blink of an eye.

Yeah...me too. One can only hope nobody ever crosses her or they be dead.
