I don't know where exactly to post this article, but current events seems like the best section.
As I'm reading it, I'm like WTF is going on in India? Listen, I know they're fighting a long history of poor treatment of women, but at some point, even the courts (who seem to be reluctant to do anything) have to say enough is enough. And where are these women's families? If someone attacked my sister with acid and they weren't prosecuted, I would not be sitting by. Do their families support these attacks?
A couple of things that stood out as particularly stupid:
Quote:
Due to the previous string of attacks, the woman was under round-the-clock police protection, but the armed policeman was barred from entering the women's hostel.
Quote:
She has subsequently been attacked twice more by the same men, in 2012 and 2013, in a bid to force her to withdraw the criminal cases against them.
Most recently, the two man allegedly forced her to drink acid while she was travelling on a train with one of her daughters in March this year.
The two men are facing trials over all the attacks, but they were released on bail in April.
A long history of poor treatment of women? That is rather hyperbolic. Indira Gandhi was the prime minister (ruler) of India in the 1980's and she was voted on by the people of India. Sure, this is a horrible incident but India is a democracy not a theocracy. Even the Hindu religion embraces women and many of their gods are female. Indian women can vote, drive, attend graduate school, serve in the military, can ascend to the highest political offices etc. The perpetrators were facing criminal trials. In other countries, the perpetrators would not even be arrested or acknowledged by any criminal court.

None of what you said precludes poor treatment of women in the country. A woman can have the right to vote or drive and still be gang-raped and have acid thrown on her. And you say the 'men are on trial'. Well, they apparently have 'been on trial' for over 5 years and have yet to be convicted, even being released on bail so that they can repeatedly attack the woman with acid again and again. Sounds like a superb justice system, no? This is not a unique situation, other woman have been attacked in this manner before and it is such a problem that the authorities have actually had to BAN the sale of acid.
Stop taking this as a personal attack on all Indians.

Women can drive and it sucks more somewhere else... so that means there isn't a long history of poor treatment of women in India?
