Yea, not the driver's fault, horrible shelving.

They should never fall like that.

Depends on whats in those boxes and the weight, they look pretty full to me and Im guessing they have not fallen before, so they must have been holding the weight.

That pallet shelving is pretty strong.

I watched this several times, and am familiar with industrial storage racks, forklifts, etc. He obviously did scrape against the bottom of the racks, but I guarantee the way they crumpled and came down quick that the racks were both flimsy AND overloaded. Sturdy racks do not come crashing down like dominoes from a forklift "bump" like that.

This was an accident waiting to happen. There are almost no shelving units that do not get brushed by a forklift at some time. There was very little turning radius in between the shelving. It isn't only that; but these are high lift forklifts. As drivers concentrate on the shelving sometimes they do not look at the space around the forklift. It is very easy to bump or nudge the pallet racks. Sometimes the pallets are slightly turned and can get wedged in a rack.

It was a catastrophic failure and I would not be surprised if somebody did not die. Even the driver could have been crushed even though they had a safety cage protecting their head. It was poor engineering and no safety precautions to prevent this kind of domino chain reaction.

After watching this video we can be more appreciative when we go to a lumber company and workers chain off areas while the forklifts place or retrieve pallets from high shelving!

PS If you blow up the video and watch the crucial seconds the driver was concentrating on the pallet blocking the middle of the isle. Not that it was an excuse for bumping the shelving. It also looks like the shelving was six high and some of the pallets contained one or five gallon bottles (which might have been a clue for a 4,000 pound pallet). That would be a lot of weight to stack that high.

Omg. There's at least two workers that were buried in that mess. Anyone know if they survived? I don't see how they could have. I can't tell if the forklift had a roof over the driver, but even if it did it was probably as secure as the shelves.

This is not the driver's fault.

This is not the driver's fault.

Forklifts have a very heavy 'safety' roof. But the sides are open and with that much weight coming down I would not think the driver's odds of surviving were that great. In the next isle over there is a hand pallet jack that looks like a worker could have been in between those isles. In the start of the video there are two workers close to our view point and both of them could have been trapped by the falling debris?

I am guessing that this video came out of China; but I do not know. I hope that we do not allow this in our Country. But I would like further information.

I was wrong (I think - I had guessed China) that was the accident at Haverhill in the UK: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-suffolk-46317195. The forklift driver was killed. I am surprised that more were not killed! They were very lucky.

Many parts of China and surrounding countries have either non-existant safety laws or corruption (or both).

You'll often find tons of knock-off products, including shelving, bolts, baby formula and everything inbetween made not up to claimed standards.

Here's a whopper for you....

So sad the driver was killed, and it just goes to show that no matter the rules and regulations in place to keep people safe in first world countries, there are still business owners who just don't care.

And if something like this did happen in China, would China allow it to be seen? They are very strict with the internet and privacy over there.
