I think a lot of people would really benefit from taking personal finance classes, especially since the majority of the population lives paycheck to paycheck. Usually they are only offered as part of your undergrad for a business/economics/accounting degree, but people majoring in those fields actually need it the least and they go on taking more in-depth classes anyway. It should be a mandatory course in your senior year in high school, and part of the core curriculum in college for all undergrad students.
Not changing your oil, checking it. Which yes, everyone should know how to do seeing as if you don't have oil in your car you won't have a car for long. Changing a tire.. Sure, we all say "Ah, I have Triple A" or roadside assistance or whatever..Until you're out in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception at 2am with a flat tire.
Bank account balancing.. Yeah.. Something of a dying thing. Didn't say the class taught it.. I brought that up when discussing Home Ec.
Until you're out in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception at 2am with a flat tire. It's not likely that THAT will happen. At least, not to the point that there needs to be a tax payer funded CLASS on it. What would LIKELY happen would be that the teenager calls a parent, or starts hoofing it.
Yeah.. Spend the tax dollars on the ONE thing that today's high school senior knows how to do perfectly.
Then why the hay have ANY of these classes? ANYTHING they want to know, there's a YouTube video for it.
I live near Raleigh. Not exactly the “big city”. It’s probably been 10 years since the last time I encountered an area with no cell reception. Coverage has increased drastically since then. And even the most rural areas have tow trucks closer than two or more hours away.
Hold on.. Raleigh.. Part of the "Research Triangle" of NC.
One of the largest tech areas on the east coast.
The #38 radio market in the US. Just behind San Jose, CA and ahead of Indianapolis, IN for comparison.
Yeah.. Raleigh qualifies as 'big city'.. Though, I will give you that it doesn't take long to get out into the sticks from there. Get out into areas around Sanford, which is far away from an interstate.. Say Cokesbury. See how reception is there.
And.. As always.. You never know pending on carrier. A few years back I was with Sprint.. I lost reception in Concord. CONCORD, NC. You know, the place with the big racetrack? The racetrack that runs the series that Sprint was sponsor of at the time? And it wasn't a raceday or anything.. Just.. No signal.
The rule is always.. When you need signal the most.. That's when you won't have it.
But... Outside of that argument.. I'd be interested to hear from people what they think are things that maybe should be taught in the class.. One that I can think of..
If you're in a minor car accident, get out of the road. Move to the shoulder or otherwise clear the roadway.
Don't need adulting classes when you CAN LITERALLY GOOGLE/YOUTUBE how to do ANYTHING.
I agree.
There's no point in offering sewing classes anymore either. Very few people sew out of necessity. Sewing these days, is a hobby. If you want to indulge your hobby, most fabric stores offer sewing lessons. A basic sewing machine is inexpensive enough, that you can try it and learn on it if you want.

My son had some girlfriends bring their clothes over to him because they could not sew.
We're talking basic here...missing button, hem seam came loose, etc.
Hand sewing to make the simple, basic repairs to clothes.
What are people doing these days..just throwing out the clothes because they lost a button ?

New York is "big city". Chicago is "big city". LA is "big city". Raleigh is not.
I've been all over the state. Deep into rural areas. Whiteville, Ahoskie, Murphy ... all over. The signal issues of 10 years ago have not been an issue for me.
I think they are a good idea. There are some basic things I would have loved to have learned.
Here are just a few suggestions of what I think would be helpful.
Filling out the EZ tax form
how to sew on a button and hem
hanging a picture and curtains
Simple recipes for when you don't have much money to spend and how to cook them... beans and rice, soup, eggs, etc.
Growing basic food plants like tomatoes
Basic cleaning and laundry
Time budgeting
How to set a table
Personal hygiene
