Wow. One was only a year old.

Four children have been found alive after surviving a plane crash and spending weeks fending for themselves in Colombia's Amazon jungle.

Colombia's president said the rescue of the siblings, aged 13, nine, four and one, was "a joy for the whole country".

The children's mother and two pilots were killed when their light aircraft crashed in the jungle on 1 May.

The missing children became the focus of a huge rescue operation involving dozens of soldiers and local people.

Oh wow, so exciting! I had opened a thread here about them awhile back - the searchers seemed sort of confident they'd be found alive.

Apparently the searchers had found child footprints.

I'd guess somebody's going to make a movie about the children surviving in the Amazon for 40 days. The oldest is the real hero. He or she had routinely cared for the younger children back home, so knew how to feed them.

She knew how to care for the infant at home where there was baby formula. How do you suspect that baby survived without that?

Unless I read the article wrong, it does state the children are from an indigenous tribe and they are taught at a young age on how to live in the jungle and to know what fruits and berries to eat. So, most likely the oldest was able to keep the baby going fine with fruits and water.

Exactly.

Man, it's so much work to click on a link...

Right! But I also dived deeper into this and watched several youtube reportings on this. It's just a miracle the kids survived because the Amazon can be a very dangerous place with all the deadly animals and the human/drug trafficking that goes on in there.

That's what an article I read said; that "it wasn't clear" how the kids survived, given the myriad dangerous animals. They were alone for 40 days; lots of opportunity for predators to strike. I'm hoping there will be more follow-up info. At last report, they were in a hospital getting care.

Absolutely amazing!
The children, members of the Huitoto Indigenous community were 13, 9, 4 y.o. plus an infant 1 y.o.. Family members said the older kids had some experience in the forest. They knew how to hunt and fish.
Their learning from indigenous families and their learning of living in the jungle has saved them. They had demonstrated an example of total survival that will be remembered in history.

The 13 y.o. Lesley who used skills learning babysitting her younger siblings kept them all safe and saved their life.
