2 weeks ago I was driving in a suburb of Southern California near a relative's house. I was driving down a very busy residential road. There was a little boy about three walking looking confused. My mouth dropped open and then I saw a youngish man about 35-40yo running up toward the toddler on the sidewalk. He wasn't close to the child by any means. They do get out of the house. In this case a tragedy was averted but in many cases one is not.
An Alabama woman who lied about her kidnapping was ordered to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution and sentenced to probation during a court appearance on Thursday, ABC News has confirmed
Yeah. A slap on the wrist.
This kind of "punishment" won't discourage future pranksters...
Did she ever admit why she created the drama?
I dunno.. $18k isn't exactly chump change
Even to her and her parents.. I don't care if I had a billion dollars.. Tossing $18k out the window.. no.
And.. If it's only psychotic rich people who will do something like this.. Well.. That should cut the numbers down.
I'm slightly surprised at ZERO jail time. I thought they might give her a weekend or two just to prove a point. But.. I think I called this all along that she wasn't going to do much, if any jail time.
I don't blame the Attorney General's office for being upset that the current laws allowed this ruling. I hope the Governor does sign into law that this will be a felony in the future.

You can bet this girl's parents will be the ones paying that fine and they will be the ones housing and feeding this girl. I doubt she's employable, at least in Birmingham. I don't know if she is still in nursing school or if she's had to drop out. It doesn't sound as though Carlee has even been ordered to do community service.
So where did the woman vanish to for 2 days? A motel? Someone picked her up and took her somewhere for those 2 days. So whoever that means a 2nd person was in on the hoax. Has this ever been revealed?
I generally agree with you but sending a first-time offender to jail is hard. Judges bleed the same blood we all do.
First time non-violent offenders generally don't go to jail because jails are already overcrowded with violent repeat offenders, not because judges have hearts.
Also, it depends on the crime. Sam Bankman Fried, Elizabeth Holmes, and Bernie Madoff were also first time non-violent offenders....But their crime was so bad they got long prison sentences.
