Wow... how bizarre and desperate, and poorly executed.

A 60 y.o. Missouri man appeared to try and cash in on an insurance policy by staging a bloody farm equipment accident.

However, there were a few holes in the man’s story. First of all, he had literally lost his legs, as in they were nowhere to be found, which was bizarre for this type of accident. Then there was the fact that the man’s wounds were too clean to have been caused by a brush hog. And finally, the man was a known paraplegic, which raised questions about how he had managed to find his way in the way of a tractor-operated brush hog.

No charges were filled. Sometimes people's stupidity is just too much trouble to deal with.

what people will do for money. Not common, but I have read other stories about people doing bodily harm to themselves for financial gain.

He should be nominated for the Darwin Award. So bizarre, he's likely to win it. How desperate does a person have to be for money that they'd do something so outrageous?

IIRC, the idiot has to die or render themselves sterile (in other words, becoming incapable of contributing to the gene pool) in order to win a Darwin Award. Don't see how cutting off one's feet would render a person unable to breed.

Oh. Ok. Thanks Parnassia. I figured stupid was stupid but now that I think of it, rending oneself sterile is actually a brilliant thing to do. Don't contribute any new offspring to the number of numbskulls already out there.

Earning an award is supposedly a positive achievement. Some idiot contriving a new way to remove themselves from the gene pool IS a positive thing! Maybe not for the idiot but for everyone else!

On the one hand it’s remarkable (for the wrong reason) for what this man did to claim the insurance, but on the other hand it’s understood that most insurances are a scam as the most people will get out of it is handing them money every year and not see a dime in return. These are two sides of the same coin.

It sounds like a macabre scene from the "Twilight Zone".
Anyway, an insurance is to cover one "whole" in the event of a loss, and not to profit from it.

I remember clearly another story, a man killed his wife and then stabbed himself to stage a murder to claim life insurance on his wife.

Never underestimate what people will do for money.

...like kill someone for a couple of bucks...

I guess depends on the level of desperation.
