Evey, when Squeaker was having her issues, our vet gave her an appetite stimulant. She hadn't eaten for almost a week, which is NOT good. Can they do that for Shadow???
Pattie if she eats before her body is ready is will aggravate her pancreas. So, we wait.
When she comes home I have to keep her fat intake under 10%. I defy any one of you to find dog food that is under 10%. Compounding that is the fact that Shadow has a laundry list of food allergies, the worst ones for her being chicken, lamb and wheat.
I have found a frozen pre-made raw bison formula that is right at 10%. It is $25 for a 6 day supply. That is my reduced cost from the guy I have loyally supported, his cost from the distributor. *sighs* We will do what we have to do for Shadow, but $200+ a month to feed the dog is going to hurt.
I have an e-mail in to a place that raises grass fed bison for slaughter. Their prices are very reasonable. They do not offer a raw diet for dogs, but I have asked if then can make one. Raw diets for dogs are a specific formula of muscle meat, organ meat and bone.
How about ground bison or ground lean turkey out of the grocery store mixed with some veggies? It's people food but it's good for dogs too.
I don't have a suggestion on the regular dog food.
I actually just got off the phone with the place that raises grass fed meat. They offer a raw diet for dogs for under $3/pound. With shipping from Texas it is still going to cost half as much as the commercially available stuff. I ordered 50 pounds plus a couple pounds of buffalo hamburger for people.

Now I just need Shadow to come home.
So, the prognosis is good? Just waiting for her to eat? What is the vet trying to give her? Did they suggest anything?

The prognosis appears to be good.
She started drinking water today and was able to keep it down. They offered her water yesterday, but she did not drink. We are literally just waiting for her to eat and be able to keep food down. I brought her food in to them on Thursday when they were ready to try feeding her. She likes this food. Dogs are smarter than we are, if her body is not ready for food she won't eat.
They have suggested patience on my part. They don't know me very well or they would know that patience is not one of my stronger skills........
We don't really know how bad it was for Shadow since her numbers were higher than the technology could read.
I have not been dogless this long since Shadow's predecessor went to Rainbow Bridge. I am losing my mind.....
That is interesting about the bison meat diet.
I remember when I had to find a low protein food for our one greyhound it was tough to find one under 20 %.
Lola is on prescription food for her bladder stones it runs almost $50 for 17 pounds
