Some apartment communities have a preferred employers list and they will waive certain fees like the application fee and deposit. Some apartments in my home offer these services. Does anyone know of any apartment community in particular that offers this?

Your focus shouldn't be on that. Those are minimum fees. Application fee is only $35 and deposit is around $100. Instead focus on getting an apartmetn that's affortable and safe.

Yes, the Village does have a preferred employers list. I know Baylor is on there. I've lived in the Village for so long that I can't remember if Children's is. But I'm thinking it is because I was working at Children's when I first moved in.

The Village will have places that match your budget. I pay less than your budget for a 1 bedroom with den which is about 940 square feet. I used to cut across town to get there....Lovers through Univ Park to University to Inwood all the way to Southwestern Medical Center Drive. That's the street on the back side of Parkland and Children's. Of course, if you're working 7a-7p or some other time not during rush hour, I'd take 75 south to Woodall Rodgers to I-35 to Medical District Drive.

I loved working at Children's. Making life better for children is what it's all about.

@Winter2010:

I don't think it's just working at the hospitals that give you discounts-- there are lots of things that can get you discounts (working at university, etc) and maybe even fraternity memberships, etc! I really don't know....except that I learned when I moved here a few weeks ago to mention UTSW! I would assume it's the same for similar professions (police, fire, etc).

@nurse318:
My impression when I looked around is that most places could be talked down from the fees they tried to list upfront (lease fee, holding fee, amenity fee, whatever -- it baffles me since adding fees on top of a lease price is not something I'd ever heard of!). I got away with only paying a deposit on my place, and was given the remainder of the month as a "pro-in" bonus (ie, moved in near the end of July, but got July free). So....I would agree with the posters above that you should focus on finding a safe, nice place, and don't fuss too much about finding places with preferred customer lists.

since you won't be living right next to work I think pretty much anything in uptown/oak lawn should be what you are looking for. If you want a little more space or slightly lower cost look around the knox/henderson area too.
