Hello all,

I am from the Northeast region of the country. It has been a rough winter so far. A couple of snow storms already, literally pounded for 3 straight weeks of 5-10 inches of snow. Just had 4 inches yesterday. Another 4-6 inches starting tomorrow night.

I was wondering if folks here could share how winter in the Dallas area has been this season? Particularly the amount of snow you've received so far this season.

And if you could share what a typical winter in Dallas would be in terms of snow.

Frankly, I'm tired of going thru massive snow storms every year. The last 3 years here has been pretty rough.

I always have the option of relocating to the Dallas area. Just want to make sure I'm not going to get the same winter that we have here.

Thank you in advance to everyone.

So far this year, we've had a light dusting once. Maybe 1/2 inch that didn't stick in Dallas and 1-2 inches that did stick in the northern suburbs.

Last year was a complete anomaly- we had several snowfalls. A few inches on Christmas Day and over a foot on 2/12/10- the biggest one-day snowfall in Dallas in like 70 years.

I used to live in NYC- winter in Dallas is a cakewalk. It's been in the 50's the past few days, will be very cold (20's tonight/tomorrow night) and then back into the 50's over the weekend. And January & February are the coldest months of the year.

Thank you for your reply. That's really great to know. Thanks for all the info.

BTW, I understand school starts earlier in Texas compared to the Northeast? I believe Texas schools start around 3rd of 4th week of August & end by end of the last week of May? Is that accurate?

As a former New Yorker, you probably still recall that school starts around 1st week of September & ends around 3rd week of June.

Thank you

Agree w/ Turtle on most. The last snow we got two weeks ago, in the Northern suburbs we got 7 " of snow, according to my tape measure in the ground. Last year 2010 we got our last "dusting" of 8" over a weekend over spring break. From my experience it was a freak anomaly.

Winters are usually cold here in the DFW area, low 20's to teens at night, a few clustered days of really freezing, bone chilling weather, but other than that not too bad. Snow or the accumulation of snow is something that is really pretty rare. Much less severe than what you've experienced lately. Ice is more of a problem here. Mostly just enough to shut down or delay schools and just enough to have enough fun in, but not have to worry about digging out of. A good full cord to cord and a half of wood will get you through the winter if you use the fire place a lot in a 2-story home.

And yes, school starts in early September and goes until 1st week of June.

We moved to the Dallas area from San Antonio in 2001. I remember as we drove past Waco, there were cars w/snow on their rooftops. Ever since we have lived here it has snowed. But compared to what you have experienced, are experiencing, it is nothing. I just hope that if you do move over here that you will bear w/us because driving around here when there is snow or ice on the road, is not the same as where you come from. I think a lot of people used to that snowy weather get very irritated and impatient w/folks around here once they get on the road.

As far as school, I have 4 elementary school-aged children and yes, you are correct, school starts the 4th week of August and ends the 1st week of June. Well, at least in the school district we attend.

I was born and raised in Dallas, and lived there all my life until I moved to NYC. I've lived in NYC for a few years, and have experienced some brutal snow storms and blizzards. Snowfall in Dallas is nothing like intense snowfall in the northeast. In Dallas, the normal snowfall is 2.5 inches for an entire year, according to the National Weather Service. The snow does not stick on the ground that much (if ever), and is actually pleasant to watch in Dallas.

I certainly miss Dallas, and can't wait to move back there to much more pleasant winters and weather in general!

Holy crow, you got 7" of snow? How far north? I live next to 190 (almost two towns north) and we only got a dusting like TC described ...

Wow! I didn't realize anyone got that much. There wasn't even enough at my house in northeast Dallas to cover the grass. I'd guess less than 1/2 inch.

Actually at DFW, the coldest average low of the year is 33 for a few days in early January. Any time we hit freezing is a below normal reading. The low temperature actually hasn't dipped below 20 at all this year here according to the National Weather Service. In the years I've lived here, temperatures in the teens only usually happen once or twice a year, if at all, in Dallas.

I agree with the rest of your post

Thanks again for all your responses. I appreciate it. It pretty much confirmed my assumptions that Dallas has a much milder winter compared to the Northeast region.

I moved from the Midwest to DFW about 13 yrs ago. I have to wear my leather jacket only once or twice a year. When we get snow here, it usually melts away in 1-3 days.
It only snows about 2-3 times per Winter-approx so there is never a long period where snow is on the ground.
Like others have said it can get down in the 20's at night, but then it will get up in the 50's or 60's the next day, granted it is a cool 50 or 60's, but not coat worthy.
