I come from Illinois and we have ILmed. It helps people who are unable to pay for healthcare associated costs like prescriptions and hospital visits.

Is there something similar in TX? Or is this a system exclusive to some states like IL?

Short answer: Medicaid, but the eligibility requirements are pretty strict. Other than that, there are the county hospitals, but that's about it...

NO--medicaid is not that only option

there used to be state insurance pool for people who need to buy their own insurance and it is not Medicaid--I have friends in Tyler who retired early w/o any company health insurance and are too young for Medicare--
he has one type of TX pool policy because he has some heath issues with high blood pressure
she has another company's individual health plan--maybe Blue Cross--
they both think they pay a lot of money for coverage they get so that is probably not for the OP
Now that part of the new US (Obama) health plan has gone into effect I am not sure how their policies were effected--
This is exactly why people need a national health care system NOT tied specifically to employer health coverage--

you should contact an independent insurance agent to see what policies might work for you--
BUT there is not state funded medical coverage for indigent people except the county hospitals which charge by financial ability and Medicaid which is very difficult for most adults to qualify for

this is screen for income calculator for certain programs

there are some local/state programs for low income people--some sponsored by churches and other organizations--

This is one of the reasons I wants to move to Texas and get out of IL. I'm not saying this about the OP, but IL is one of the biggest welfare states in America. The reason IL is in shambles is because the working class continues to get pounded into the ground to pay for the non-working (or Illegal). In IL, people who aren't working aren't used to having to pay for things such as insurance, etc. Normally they get social services for free handed to them on a silver platter, and that silver was paid for by the working class.

The system in Texas is the reverse if Illinois. You have to cover yourself. Like the other Posters said. If u are moving to Texas for a job, the employer will have an option. If u are moving here without a good job, it will be an extremely difficult situation. People are also hurting here and it will get a lot worse as the funding crisis continues.

BTW, poverty in Texas is rising, the jobs created were all low skill low wage. The middle class is declining. The grass is not always greener. Every state has pros and cons.
