Hi everyone,
This is my first post here in this wonderful forum. I am an Indian currently based in India and will be coming (with my wife) to Plano / McKinney for work purposes. My work location will be in McKinney.
I have few (in fact many queries) and i am all curious to know the answers

1. I plan to stay in Plano. Is this a good decision ? I have got to know that most Indians prefer to stay in Plano. Please suggest.
2. I have heard that public transport is as good as non-existent, how true is it ?
3. List of preferred places to stay in Plano for easy access to walmart etc supermarkets and other places ?

Anything else anyone want to add here, please pitch in

PS: This is my first trip to the United States

If your work is in McKinney, you should look at living there. Plano is a decent drive (20 minutes) and there are plenty of nice places to live in McKinney.

Yes, there is bascially no public transit here. You will have to have at least one car for transportation.

There are plenty of supermarkets, Wal-Mart/Target, etc. throughout DFW. As long as you are not out in the rural areas, access to shopping will not be a problem.

But you see i will be preferring Plano because of proximity to Indian grocery stores and Indian neighbors, which may not be possible in Mckinney. I am aware that car will be necessary which i will take but it will have to wait for couple of months before i earn that much. Also i will be getting a second hand car. Can you tell me what price range i can expect for used cars ? Travelling is not an issue as i am used to travelling for an hour each day one way here.
I am so so confused at the moment because this is my first travel to US and i have no clue about the place i am visiting.

If there are no buses, how do you plan on getting to work? Walking many miles in 100+ degree heat? Rent an apartment near work.

Depending upon precisely where you will work in Mckinney Plano might be an easy fit.

We used to live in Plano at Legacy and Preston roughly. My wife worked in Mckinney near Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. The drive took about 15 minutes most of the time.

Looks like your work location isn't in the best area of Mckinney. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad...just more of an industrial area. Probably not where you want to rent an apartment. There would be a few small Mexican grocery stores/restaurant, but no Indian stores. You COULD walk to/from downtown Mckinney, which has a lovely square full of shops and restaurants, but it is mostly speciality shops, not places like a grocery store. It would still be quite a walk though.
So, since it looks like you will probably have to drive anyway, I would suggest renting in Plano, and riding with your colleage. DO you know what part of Plano he is in? The indian population is very large in Plano, but is more concentrated in the northern part of the city. There is a big Indian grocery store at Spring Creek and Alma, and I know there are a number of apartments in that area.
