Since you mention CHEAP and a few of these suggestions definately do not fit "cheap" - here are a some other options.
*Nasher as mentioned above is free on the first Saturday of the month.
*DMA is half price on Thurs; free for students and educators 5-9pm - check the schedules to see if there is a visiting artist project (included with admission)
*Arboretum is $1 for the month of August, but transit may be an issue.
*Northpark Center is an extension of the Nasher - amazing art throughout.
*Crow Collection is always free.

Go Uptown. Start at Starbuck's in West Village. Take the trolley around. Wait for Uptowners to show up at Taco Diner. Drink. Walk up Mckinney, wander into the loudest clubs you can find. See if you can get into ZaZa or the Ritz just for the people watching. Walk back, do drunken Karaoke at the bar next to Sfuzzi's. Do not go to Sfuzzis.

Ditto,

Uptown is a lot of fun on weekends. You can find people walking from club to club or restaurant etc.

Of all sources AAA just had an article on this. Now I'm thinking of taking Amtrak from Austin to Dallas and then using DART.
