Hey guys,

I am moving back home to California. I loved my 2 years in Dallas, but it is time to head home =)

Anyway, on the way here, I took the LA>PHX>Tucson>El Paso route. Should I take this route again, or is it worth it to take I-40 back through Albequerque?

I-40 always for the win because you can always jump off and ride older alignments of Historic Route 66.

BUT if it is winter and the you see that the weather is horrible, then (And only then) do you do I-10.

Besides, OP, you are going back to SF, right? Then I-40 is a no brainer. I-10 is only really an option if you are going to LA.

+1, that's what we took driving from the Bay to Dallas. Really smooth / straight drive, and lots of places to stop when needed. Good luck!

I took this route (I40) from DFW to So. California recently during Memorial Weekend. I really enjoyed it. I had researched the pros/cons of taking this route or the Southern route (I10) which goes through El Paso. The pros of the northern route (I40) is that the temperatures are slightly cooler when traveling during the extreme heat during summer season. Also, you will travel through Flagstaff which puts you near the Grand Canyon and Sedona in case you want to make a side trip. Some have said if you have any car troubles and wind up stranded during your trip you are better off with the southern route (I10) as there are more people on the road.

These are exactly the responses I was looking for. I plan on doing I-40 instead. Awesome!

I am going to stop in Flagstaff for 2 nights so I can visit the Grand Canyon for a day. Thanks for all the input, everyone!

If you visit the Grand Canyon I highly recommend taking the train which leaves from Williams. This is what I did Memorial Weekend. You can get a discount through Auto Club (AAA). The Grand Canyon is allowing fewer cars to enter the park (due to budgeting woes affecting national parks) which is one argument in favor of the train which will run you around $70 (round trip) for coach class. Have a great time!
