Ummm I haven't been to Las Colinas in awhile but my husband and I loved riding the river taxi's over there and then getting hibatchi over at Jinbeh. You have all peaked my interest and now will want to go venture that way to see if it has gotten more busy. Once upon time the Riverwalk did not have much there except the taxis and a few restaurants with my favorite Casa Rio. Last year when I visited, it was booming with shops galore there.... can someone tell me if Los Colinas has gotten more shops in 10 years? Even if it didn't, there is a canal and we loved it then. Very romantic....

I've noticed a lot of construction around the canal area on my way to the airport over the last year or so.

There are zillions of new apartments in the Las Colinas Urban Center and it's very "urban" in density. The canals used to be pretty dead (ever heard of a McDonald's going out of business? The one there did.) except for a few restaurants and specialty stores but I think many of them departed years ago. For the longest time, there weren't enough people to keep them in business but that may be changing with all the new housing. I see a lot of shops on the ground floors of the apartment buildings but have no idea what's down along the canals anymore. I'm afraid I agree with Sick...

The RiverWalk at the Las Colinas Urban Center is not a restaurant-intensive area comparable to the San Antonio RiverWalk, but it does have a few places to go, and is an interesting and pleasant walk, in my opinion.

The Cool River restaurant is located on a prominent part of the canal, and is a pleasant place to eat and drink. There is a Japanese restaurant next door. The adjacent street has several blocks of very urban-styled apartment buildings, with shops and restaurants on the street, and has a vaguely European feel to it. I have enjoyed the Bakklava at the cafe and convenience store nearby.

The eastern shore of Lake Carolyn opposite the Urban Center is slated for a massive urban town center to be built in conjunction with the two new light rail stations slated for completion in 2011. It will be a pedestrian-oriented mixed use cityscape with plenty of shopping at pedestrian level. Check it out at Part V: Vision: South Urban Center

Another waterfront urban district is the replica of a Croatian village called Adriatica under construction in McKinney. A Dallas developer was so smitten by the Dalmation coast that he returned to Dallas intending to exactly replicate the village waterfront. The village is currently under construction, but it should be complete in a couple of years. He is even building a small ship for the harbor. Check it out at Adriatica :: McKinney, Texas :: Another Blackard Development (http://www.adriaticamckinney.com/adriatica/default.htm - broken link)
