Living in between Dallas and Fort Worth basically puts you in the middle of nowhere. I'd choose to be closer to either city, personally. Las Colinas is fine, but it suffers from some congestion issues for both of you.

The commuter train between downtown Dallas and downtown Fort Worth is great. It has free wi-fi and I know a lot of people that love the commute on the train.

I've heard South Grand Prairie and South Arlington are nice areas, down by 20 or south of 20. I just saw on the news were some people walking in the bishop arts district were robbed at gun point. Pardon my ignorance if its not the case but I've always thought South Dallas is the hood.

"South Dallas" is south of I-30 (but south of the Cedars neighborhood that is directly south of I-30 @ Downtown) and east of I-35. This includes the Oak Cliff, Fair Park, etc neighborhoods that are very low income and 95%+ black and Hispanic. Some of the areas within South Dallas are very crime-ridden, but then again, so are areas in North Dallas (just east of NorthPark Mall, parts of Lake Highlands, parts over by Love Field) that you've probably driven by and not thought twice about....ever played Top Golf on Park Lane?

West of I-35 is North Oak Cliff, including many middle class neighborhoods like Wynnewood, Kessler Park, Stevens Park, Ravenia Heights, etc. It is probably the most evenly diverse area of Dallas- whites, blacks, Hispanics, straights, gays, etc all living amongst each other. Is there crime there? Yes- but remember this is a BIG city and people even get held up in the lovely suburbs from time to time (ie, 3 people shot within a 1 month period in Frisco last summer! No one thinks of Frisco as the "hood", right?) People get held up in Uptown; people have been raped there, too. Not trying to scare you, you just have to stay alert whether you're living in a nice part of town or a not-so-nice one as crime can happen anywhere.

I would not hesitate to suggest North Oak Cliff for young professionals with your commute, just as I would not hesitate to suggest Uptown for a young professional working in Dallas.

South Arlington & South GP do have nice neighborhoods south of I-20. But absolutely NO nightlife whatsoever. If you think going to the mall for Saturday night date night is fun, have at it. But if you enjoy city living, you'll be hoofin' it to Dallas or Fort Worth every single weekend.

DFW is alot like the Baltimore-Washington area. There isn't a ton of traffic from Dallas to Fort Worth (or the reverse). Each is its own developed city and are distinctly different.

So as TC80 says, pick the best place for a young couple (Uptown) and just deal with the commute. From NW Highway to Ft. Worth it's a reverse commute and not a horrific drive.

Greetings from another one who spent a few years in Chi-town and loved it. We may be relocating to the Fort Worth/Arlinton area (husband working in Arlington) and I'm giving serious consideration to living in downtown Fort Worth. How much of a commute is it from the arts district in Fort Worth to Arlington near the college? And is the traffic bad during rush hours, or would we be going against the major traffic.

Moderator cut: off topic

I think Uptown is a good fit for you, I used to live there myself, and I don't think you'll mind the commute too much either, in return for being in the center of the action basically.
