There is one major department store in downtown Dallas, and the good news is that later on this month, it will be open 1PM to 5PM on Sunday. I won't mention it by name, in order to avoid the prohibition on advertising, but it is a very upscale one. DT Dallas has many restaurants and cultural attractions such as museums, but is very weak as a shopping venue, compared to other cities' downtowns. But it is getting better.

The Main Street corridor in particular is coming alive, with the completion of the retail shops in the 3RD Rail building. When other current projects are completed, such as the Mercantile complex, and the Joule Urban Resort, the small retail environment should be getting larger.

Yes Main St is looking better everyday. I really like the crosswalks they put in. Do you know what is going into the Dallas Alley space? I believe it is next to that new hotel???

Hmmmmm, I wonder what it could be?!?! Maybe it's that store that's celebrating its 100th anniversary. Maybe?

I do think it's a shame that there's so much first floor space available that fails when it comes to retail because people don't shop downtown. What was that cool gift shop around the corner from Stone Street/Campisi's? I think they moved to/back to Deep Ellum.

Well, the space is still occupied. It is now taken by the adjacent restaurant, so the commercialn activity is stilll viable. But yes, the shop was an interesting place that will be missed.

Yeah what's the deal? Do texans love malls that much? Downtown Dallas has sooo much potential. I guess that is a step for that dept. store to open on Sundays downtown but the hours need to be at least 11-6.

I hate malls. North Park is about the only one I could be dragged into and I didn't get in there until almost a year after the expansion.

Frasier "I met this girl at the mall"

Niles "You went to a mall! Did anyone see you?"

NorthPark Mall and the Galleria are the two single biggest reasons why there is no life downtown (or it has struggled so much). You move everything there downtown - the city is a whole different and better place

Every major city has many malls, dozens of them. In Philadelphia, many of the upscale shops are sited in the King of Prussia mall.

DT Dallas has very little shopping for the same reason other large Sunbelt metros have very little shopping in their downtowns... Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, even downtown Los Angeles have limited shopping opportunities in their downtowns.

On the other hand, cold-weather northern metros such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, etc, have highly developed shopping districts downtown.
