Ok -so my trip plans are all coming together. I know for sure I want to spend the night at a hotel within Dallas, but it needs to be within walking distance to the good stuff. I've heard that uptown is nice and has a lot of action, but I'm not sure what the night scene is like. I'm not looking to go get drunk in a bar, but spend a fun evening with my hubby and my girlfriend in some places that are open late! We'd love to sit in a lounge somewhere, cafe, salsa club, jazz/blues, heck - I might get them into someplace playing country! It's probably going to be my one late night of the trip, so I want to make it good Suggestions for areas/streets/specific hotels/fun places?

Also - anyone know of anything fun going on the weekend of 10/13? (fairs/events/expos etc), or know of good links so I can search?

Thanks all!

10/13 is quite the weekend to be coming in town! It's the annual University of Texas vs Oklahoma University game ("Texas-OU Weekend") that is played at Dallas' Cotton Bowl in Fair Park. There will be massive parties going in all over town on Friday, the 12th and the game is Saturday during the day. Expect lots of traffic & lots of people if you are anywhere in the downtown/uptown area during the whole weekend.

The State Fair of Texas is also going on right now. I'd recommend going on Friday or Sunday b/c it's definitely a unique once-a-year treat!!

For places to go out, you may want to make a reservation at one of the restaurants in the Bishop Arts District, which is just west of downtown in a beautiful hilly neighborhood that claims to be "the Austin of Dallas". It's still going to be busy (had dinner there the night before TX-OU last year), but it's a bit more off the beaten path than Uptown/ Downtown/ Lower Greenville/ etc. Check out Tillman's Roadhouse, Bolsa, or Hattie's. Or go down there for brunch @ Longfellow's. It's a great little area with indie shops, restuarants, coffee shops, galleries, etc.

Or eat at Smoke, the restaurant at the nearby Belmont Hotel, a renovated 1940's "motor court" style hotel that is adorable and has drop-dead views of downtown from it's outdoor patio.

Bishop Arts/ North Oak Cliff doesn't meet your "walking to" criteria, but if you stay at the Belmont, they have a complimentary shuttle service to Bishop Arts if you arrange ahead of time.

Also- if you don't have a hotel room booked by now, it's going to be DIFFICULT and EXPENSIVE due to TX-OU.

It may be difficult to get a reservation at this late date but, if you're in the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff, try to get into Boulevardier Boulevardier - Oak Cliff - Dallas, TX or Lucia Lucia - Oak Cliff - Dallas, TX. These are the two must-eat-at restaurants in the Cliff right now. Failing that, at least taste the pies at Emporium Emporium Pies - Oak Cliff - Dallas, TX

If you're into live music, there's the wonderful Kessler Theater not far away: The Kessler Theater

You're slightly less likely to run into the Texas-OU hordes in Oak Cliff than in Uptown/downtown/Lower Greenville/Knox-Henderson. But you definitely should check out the State Fair.
