I buy mine at Central Market, or make my own.

I lived for 18 years in NOLA and honestly, I would rather pay the shipping from Haydel's, Gambino's or Randazzo's from back home then buy what the grocery stores here attempt to call "King Cakes". I have made my own using a Mam Papaul's mix Mardi Gras King Cake Mix with Praline Filling - Mam Papaul's OFFICIAL Site and it honestly tastes more like the real thing than the grocery store versions here.

Picked up a Whole Foods cream cheese filled king cake on Sunday and it was OK- if anything, it had the added incentive of having no artificial ingredients in it (perk for my kids I guess) but it was dry and did not have the texture of a king cake (it was more like bread and did not have any cinnamon in it). I am a foodie and love shopping at Central Market for all the ingredients to make a real muffellata from the deli, and the seafood section to make my gumbo, but their interpretation of what a King Cake is did not look right at all and I would consider the CM version to be second to Whole Foods. That being said, the King Cakes at the regular grocery stores like Kroger and Market Street pretty much look like standard cinnamon rolls with purple, green and gold sugar on them. In years passed, I've picked up a Galette de Rois from Le Madeline which is the French version of King Cake (so it will have a plastic baby but it's a flaky pastry with almond filling, not a NOLA like King Cake) but I haven't been recently.

A NOLA friend passed on this recipe to me and I plan to try it. She basically doubled the amount of cinnamon sugar and went through the trouble of twisting two dough rolls instead of one plain ring. I am going to attempt to do an actual braid. Southern Bite – Stacey Little's Southern Food Blog – Mardi Gras King Cake

I think everything I've read is spot on. Central market is OK but nothing special. Rest of the grocery stores ones I'd pass on.

My question is where can I get some good Leidenheimer style bread? Really any homemade bread for that matter. I all of the bakeries around here seem to specialize in cakes and sweets.

The Third Monday Trade Days on Hwy 380 near McKinney has the Seven Sisters Bakery selling there. I suspect they sell at all the Trade Days. That one is misnamed to me b/c it is the Fri-Sat-Sun before the 3rd Monday. Seven Sisters are from some religiou community and they bake organic.

Acadian Bakery in Houston bakes the real deal and ships. Surprised Mardi Gras is a big deal now in Dallas. ..

There is a very complete listing of King Cakes on Culture Map (Dallas edition, of course). I might have to try Village Bakery's!!!

I'll be heading to Meche's in Lafayette, LA the week before MG; I pick up extras for people here every year. I have yet to find a place here in the DFW area that sells good legit King Cake.

I just had a Haydel's last weekend and it refreshed my memory of how good real King Cake is. I don't think you'll find anything local that even comes close. You can order them delivered next day for $40. Or you can try and make your own.

I make my own. (Emeril's recipe) You can also get mixes (and Cafe du Monde Coffee & beignet mix YUM) at World Market.

The grocery store's are just a giant cinnamon roll with colored icing. Making your own is fun and not that hard. I've been making them for the last 5 years.

We're having a mardi gras party with gumbo, jambalaya, hurricanes, etc. I love this holiday!

That being said, because of the timing of Mardi Gras this year, it seems to be overshadowed by V Day in the store.
