I would really appreciate some feedback. I'm relocating to Dallas for a job that is located in Las Colinas. I like the idea of being able to avoid commuting, having spent years driving 40 minutes to school in Tucson, AZ. I know rent is relatively less expensive in Irving than downtown Dallas and is quieter. But I'm also interested in living downtown near other professional 20-somethings and not having to drive to get groceries or enjoy the nightlife over there and get me out of my comfort zone a bit.

My salary is going to be about 55K and I wanted to find somewhere decent for $800-$1000. Any recommendations on which area(s) would be preferable?

Thank you in advance for any feedback!

Look on Las Colinas. The aren't as many 20-somethings there as in Uptown, but there are quite a few, and its a quick drive down there on weekends. I totally understand about not wanting a long commute!

Oak Lawn and Uptown are about a 15 minute drive to Las Colinas, plus/minus a slow driver or two. Take a place in Las Colinas or the Uptown area for six months. Learn where you are and what you want. Make adjustments as necessary.

Las Colinas isn't bad, but it's not going to be as lively or have the number of young professional neighbors your wanting. Las Colinas is not cheap, the rental rates are comparable to Uptown, downtown, Oak Lawn/Turtle Creek. If I was making the choice I'd bight the bullet and try out an in town neighborhood first. Uptown and Oak Lawn are both good options to try out, and neither are a long commute to Irving.

plan on 30+ minutes in traffic from Uptown to LC, not 15 minutes. I live in LC & there's no way to make it in 15

I lived in Oak Lawn for ten years and made that drive. To Las Colinas for a while, to Hidden Ridge, to Belt Line. The Belt Line drive was more like 22 minutes. Believe me, I wouldn't have done it at 30 minutes. I had that option.

The drive was reverse rush hour. There was an occasional delay, like ice on the Trinity bridge. That took two hours but then I pulled off to make a pit stop and then an alternate route which took about seven minutes with no ice.
