I don't always agree with Dwaine Caraway, but he has an excellent idea to address chronic homelessness in Dallas. His suggestion is to give the homeless a bus ticket back to where they came from.
Quote:
"I'm for getting a ticket and, if you're from Virginia, I want you to go to Virginia. If you're from Arizona, I want you to go to Arizona. ... I want to help you if you're from Dallas, but people are coming here because we have so much stuff going that we're one of the only cities that they feel that they can reach into, and it's becoming a burden." -Dwaine Caraway
The bridge is overcrowded with people who are not even from Dallas, and for years the city has unfairly carried the burden of other local cities.
Quote:
Other cities -- Plano, Desoto, Duncanville, Allen -- they're taking advantage of us. [Their homeless] are coming here to Dallas, and they're not helping Dallas."
I think this deserves serious consideration from the Dallas City Council. Nice to see some honesty from local politicians for a change!

Why not just kill them? It's more cost effective.

It's not fair that Dallas gets stuck paying for all these people when they are not from here. Many of the homeless here probably have family somewhere else that could care for them. This just provides them a way to get back home.

If Dwaine Caraway thinks Dallas is the homeless capital of the world, he has never left Dallas.

Let's just send everyone not from here back, including all the international corporations and all the working folks contributing to our tax base. Then we will all be homeless. But of course I won't be here because I will be back to where I am "from" .... A place we left 56 years ago.

In fairness that's not precisely what he said. BTW - I'm not a Caraway fan by any means. He makes a great point about the 'burbs using Dallas as both a literal placeholder for many of their homeless not to mention feeder, blanketer, clothier etc. It's similar to how Collin County wantonly freeloads on Dallas taxpayers via Parkland Hospital.

ETA - I'll try to find supporting info. but if memory serves CoCo residents use right around $25M of unreimbursed Parkland services per year.

True. Related to that I'm really glad The Dallas and North Dallas Chambers of Commerce have more or less ditched the silly idea of helping the region first and Dallas second. Frankly, after just a couple of years we are seeing the Dallas business climate improve exceptionally. I don't know how much of that is due to the new Dallas first stance but the new notion can't hurt.

Money for the homeless doesn't come from cities.
Suggest you talk to this City Councilman with all the solutions and ask if he knows, in writing, where "homeless" money amounts actually come from.

You have state and federal matching/qualification monies and organizations such as the Salvation Army that also receives government monies.

The reason is varied as to why homeless come into large towns, but one major reason is that the support services must be there to cover the numbers in one place.

Politicians that say blanket things like "give them all a shovel" or "send them home" are postering for their constituency.
