We'll be looking for a rental house/townhouse in the Dallas area very soon. To me, the obvious places to start the search would be: realtor.com, trulia.com, The Star-Telegram, and I'll contact realtor offices.

Are there any other "hidden gem" ways to find a rental house in the area?

Our budget will be small, so I'm going to have to do a lot of looking and need all the options I can get.

Also drive around your desired areasa. Many small-time landlords rent out a carriage house, or M-I-L space without advertising.

I'd recommend finding a realtor who knows the area well and is willing to help you out. I sent a PM with a link to one we used last year. Coming from out of state, it was quite helpful!

Drive around and look for signs. See if your target neighborhood has a Facebook page and ask (how we found our rental in Richardson.) I found Craigslist to be completely useless.

I think it depends on the area too. In East Dallas, Craigslist was very helpful. Our landlord didn't advertise anywhere else (except for a sign out front). For his one bedroom, I replied within a few hours of his posting and we ended up renting. When we left, the same thing happened.

There are also lots of apartment complexes with townhouses. Some are exclusively townhouses and some are mixed. Prices will be all over the place depending on exact location and age of the complex. I think most rental search engines let you filter on townhomes.

One concern I've had is the "horror stories" of people doing a private rental from an owner who lets the place go into foreclosure. I have zero data on how frequently this happens, or how frequently problems for the tenant ensue, but it is something to keep in mind as you look at bargain priced independent rentals.
