We're moving to Texas from Missouri. My husband will be working in the Lakewood area and I have a daughter that will be attending the University of North Texas in Denton. I'm trying to find an area that would split the commute time for both of them. I would like my husbands commute to be 30 to 40 minutes if possible and my daughter the same or longer if necessary. I like the Frisco, Mckinney area but have read that hwy 75 is bad for traffic. My husband will need to be at work by 8:00am. I would appreciate any input. The fastest commute is important so open to any tollways. Wanted to add Lewisville and any other areas that might work. We need to buy a house.

If you're wanting 30-40 minutes to Lakewood during rush hour, you're only going to want to live as far north as North Richardson or South Plano.

Unfortunately, there is nowhere in the immediate DFW area that will meet both of those criteria. Lakewood is in the heart of Dallas Country, and UNT is in Denton County, so there is a lot of geography and heavy traffic between the two. It might be easier if your daughter lived on campus at UNT, and the rest of the family lived in Lakewood. Your daughter could come home and visit on weekends...

Is the UNT Dallas campus an option for some of your daughter's classes? If not, I would try to get her classes scheduled so that she isn't driving there during normal commute times, and try to get as many classes in one day as possible. So maybe she only has classes on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, etc.

Are you buying a home or renting? If it's that important to be close to your daughter in college I suggest renting something up that way. If you are buying you should buy in Lakewood if you can afford to do so. Presumably, your daughter will not be in school but a few years and your home may be forever in Lakewood.

This. There's really no nice way to split those two commutes, it's going to be a beating for everyone involved.

Just to give you a little more perspective, Lakewood to UNT is a good hour with NO traffic. During rush hour, expect it to take close to double the time.

Lewisville to Lakewood would be a horrific commute -- close to an hour on a good day. My husband used to commute from Legacy to 75/Northpark and it took him over an hour on most days. That was over 12 years ago, and I can only imagine it's gotten way worse.

North Dallas and parts of Farmers Branch might makes sense. Lakewood is 100% not feasible for you daughter unless she could leave at 6 or after 9AM and return before 3 or after 6:30 or make the journey 2/3 times per week. Traffic between Lewisville and UNT is inexplicably bad during rush hour.
