Austin looked like the next Hollywood tonight.

Seth Rogen & Snoop sure were showing Austin the love.

Jimmy Kimmel is there all week filming his show for SXSW.

....as far as anything being "the next Hollywood"---it's a silly statement. Nothing can be compared to Hollywood when it comes to film production. So much of their economy is the film business. Film production in Dallas is barely a blip on the radar. Not even Austin (which has a lot more production than Dallas), can be compared to Hollywood. The only other American city that might come close is NYC. Every other state is competing for scraps of an ever diminishing pie, as more and more productions shoot in Canada. But State incentives do make a difference. Sadly, Texas' incentives cannot compare to the other states (see here), but incentives (or lack thereof) are just part of the issue---there's still many reasons why more production goes to Austin vs. Dallas----Austin has far more experienced crews, much better locations and diversity of 'looks' that a film can use, Austin is also far more film friendly, in general....again, there are serious issues holding Dallas back in big ways when it comes to film production. If you're looking to film in Texas, or you have have to film in Texas, Austin, is your best bet----but better yet is to avoid Texas, in general.....film in neighboring Louisiana or New Mexico, instead----much more film friendly, better incentives, more experienced crews, etc....

Did you see Kimmel last night ? If you did then you know where the next Hollywood is, or atleast the Texas version of Hollywood.

That's what I was saying.

Dallas isn't even on the Hollywood radar. Austin is sparking the interest (literally) *cough, cough* of Hollywood. Snoop loves Austin & he's apparently good friends with Willy going by what he was talking about last night.

"The streets are lined with trucks marked “Film Fleet” and the student parking lots have been roped off for “crew parking” and “extras parking.” Film crews are out in full force, rolling heavy equipment around the grass.

NBC Universal has been out since early this morning, filming the pilot for a new TV series, “Salvation.”

The real test will be if the show gets picked up, will they choose to stay in Dallas? Usually, if the pilot shoots in Dallas, and it gets picked up, they take it elsewhere. If the city is interested in having more things shoot there, people should be asking why that happens. I'll be happy to shed more light on the reasons, if people are interested!

There's so many reasons that productions should choose Austin and surrounding areas to film in, as opposed to Dallas. As things are, Dallas simply cannot compete with Austin. Nor can Texas compete with other states when it comes to production. Again, the reasons for this are incentives, experience of crews, lack of different "looks", how accommodating the city/state are, etc. There are many serious problems when it comes to production in Dallas and that is why it will never be a major hub of production anytime soon. These little projects like the pilot mentioned in this forum might generate a little buzz and excitement here and there. But again, it's really nothing, relatively speaking. If you compare the tiny bit of production in Dallas to what is going on in Austin, or what is going on in Texas in general to what is going on in New Orleans/Louisiana, New Mexico, or North Carolina, one can see that Texas, and especially Dallas, are not really competing much at all when it comes to production. It's to the point where I try to take productions to other cities and states, when I can... it's just not worth the hassle of trying to make things happen here, as the city and the film industry (if you can call it that) in Dallas, in general, don't comprehend film production, and its needs, etc.

From a logistics standpoint, Dallas has a great location. Direct flights to LAX or NYC which makes it easier on cast, crew and producers. Logistics has hurt Shreveport, La. as there are no direct flights from Shreveport to LA/NY or even to NEW ORLEANS and BATON ROUGE if you can believe it! Dallas could really become a super-player if the tax incentives were to be raised even a little bit just for the logistics benefits and hospitality amenities alone.
