My husband and I will be moving to Dallas from Florida in early June. We're looking to rent a house or a duplex for a year or two before buying, and we've settled on East Dallas (especially Lower Greenville, Junius Heights, or Lakewood).

Some background info: we are in our late 20's, no kids, one 60 lb. dog (well-behaved). My husband got a good job in Dallas and I'm currently applying for jobs downtown.

I've been having a hard time finding resources for rental home listings in those neighborhoods online. Trulia and Zillow don't seem particularly reliable, and Craigslist seems to just be a mess of the same 2 duplexes listed over and over. Where should I look to find actual houses on the market? Is there an online resource, or should we go through a rental agent? Does anyone have any agent recommendations for that area?

We'll be up in Dallas in mid-April to look at places for a few days and (hopefully!) sign a lease. TIA for any help or recommendations!

EDIT: Preferred budget under $1500- 1 or 2 bedroom

feet on the ground driving around is the best way to find rentals in that part of town. Properties get grabbed up pretty quickly and many landlords simply put up a for rent sign. You might try padmapper.com and of course Realtor.com has rental properties listed. But you are looking in a very desirable area where things move fast.

Try the Casalinda area. There are apartments that fit your budget and are pet friendly.

I drove around when we were looking in 2010, but I did find ours on Craigslist--I contacted the landlord within 2 hours of him posting and rented it ASAP!

I did help a friend find a place to rent in this area last year and toured places listed on the MLS with a realtor.

Try Hotpads.com. Also, be ready to jump on something if you really like it. Rentals go really quickly in the neighborhoods you're looking at.

Thanks, all. Is 7 weeks out too early to look for a place in those neighborhoods?

7 weeks out is not to early, but the rental market is HOT. If you find a property you like, you may have to sign a little early or do an extended lease to secure the property. Good luck on your search.

Saw some "For Lease" signs at small houses/duplexes on Junius St. and Worth St. in Junius Heights this morning. These probably aren't listed anywhere, so your best bet would be to drive by and call the # on the sign if you like what you see. Good luck!

Update: Thanks for your advice, everyone! We took your suggestions, looked at listings, and spent a few hours driving around. We ended up finding a beautiful duplex in Lower Greenville (called the number on the For Lease sign). Can't wait to move to Big D!
