I have been searching crime stats on McKinney, TX and its scaring me. I'd love to hear it from those who live there - do you feel safe here?? Does there seem to be a lot of crime?

McKinney covers a large area from 7 figure properties to public housing. McKinney is very safe family-ville in general.

What could possibly be scaring you? McKinney is a safe suburb. It doesn't mean you can be foolish and leave your front door unlocked or your handbag sitting in the front seat of your car when you park (McKinney IS part of a huge metropolitan area afterall), but in general crime is low.

Just wanted to add that we watch the local news nightly and you can avoid 99% of violent crime in the Dallas area by not marrying a crazy person and not doing drugs. Almost every murder / violent attack that hits the news is either domestic violence or drug related, including the last few I can think of for McKinney.

"Crimes of opportunity" are probably the most prevalent. For example, people leaving their cars unlocked in their driveway with their briefcases or phones sitting out in plain site. Or people accidentally leaving their garage doors open overnight.

You'd be amazed at what kind of stuff you see sitting out in the open in cars in parking lots too. Hide your stuff and lock your house/car. Don't leave your purse unattended in your shopping cart (I always keep it on me).

That sort of information is meaningless if it isn't framed in comparison to other places. A much more useful statistic is how Mckinney stacks up to the average crime rate in the US, particularly in similarly-sized cities. Just about every city has assaults and even arson. What matters is the rate of these crimes relative to their rates elsewhere.
