Where do you come up with this stuff?

The Automobile and Practice Road (think that's right) was built in part before WWI in the 1910s.

The main reason for the Autobahns.....which the US knew about in 1927 or '28 latest - 555 was in full blown construction in '29, pushing two decades before Ike "saw" them, was to put unemployed Germans to work as their economy had been wrecked by the effects of The Treaty of Versailles.

The interstate highway system was designed to connect REGIONS, not go through inner cities or downtown areas. Dallas is sadly paying for that horrific mistake.

Urban highways were used as a social engineering scheme

I get a good laugh at those that accuse proponents of walkability to be the ones who are trying to "socially engineer" society when it was those good ol' FREEDOM lovin' highways that did that in the first place. Ah the hypocrisy.

This is very interesting. Most other large cities I've visited have an interstate that dumps you off into a "ring" highway around the city (think something like 635 or 820 in DFW). The major interstate never goes into the city. Most of the interstate traffic is people commuting through the state. Most of the "ring" traffic is people commuting around the city.

There are some exceptions to the rule though. I-70 runs right through Kansas City (but traffic isn't that bad), I-35 runs right down the middle of Minneapolis, and I-20 sort of runs through the middle of Atlanta.

That big I-35E, I-30, US-75 cluster in Dallas is just horrible!

Umm.. what?

The vast majority of cities in the U.S., particularly in the west and Midwest, have interstate highways running through the city. 35 alone goes through SA, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Minneapolis, St. Paul, etc. 70 runs through STL, KC, and Den. 5 runs through Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, and LA. You get the idea.

But they don't usually run right through the middle of the city. They usually bypass the main part of the city.

Imagine how much worse I-95 would be if it ran right through the middle of DC, NYC, and Boston.

I'm not going to argue with you. I just recommend that you get off the freeway any time the military needs to use it. When two men get in a serious life and death fight in a bar, they won't have the time to think whether any babies are in the way.

I went to listen to a Jewish man talk about being a kid and surviving the end of the war. Walking out from the concentration camp led him to a brand spanking new autobaun.

The idea of having service roads isn't insane. They have to have them.

Actually they do. All of the examples I listed do as well as others (Houston, SLC, etc.)

I will grant you that the east coast corridor is slightly different (and I don't have much experience with that area) but where are "most of the cities" you have been too? I thought you had spent time in STL and KC, both have which have highways running through them (although not the volume of traffic here, which I agree makes it a nightmare).

A number of cities have subsequently built bypasses (rarely "rings") since the Interstate system was begun in the 50s, but not all of them.

Been there, done that many times in my life, which has been predominantly at military installations.

A military convoy just takes a lane like everyone else--usually the right lane, since the military never goes the speed limit. Most military ground vehicles can't go very long or very far at 70 mph, and none of their procedures permit convoys such high speeds.
