Hi,

We are a family of 4 living in MA right now and looking to move to Texas, and have zeroed in our search to Frisco, TX.

My 5 year old is border-line asthma due to a high-risk C-CAM surgery which he had when he was a year old. We have noticed that as soon as winter sets in he gets bronchial, pneumonia-like cough and is often on antibiotics for most of the winter. Excessive exposure to air-conditioning also results in severe coughs.

We researched that Texas is very high on the list for allergies and needed help and advice that if we decide to move there would it worsen my little boy's condition?

Thanks
Smith02

If your son's asthma triggers are allergies and air conditioning then DFW is probably not the place for you.

My allergy "season" when we lived in DFW lasted 8-9 months out of the year, and you'll be in air conditioning 24/7 from the middle of June 'til the middle of September. There's no way for sure of knowing how he'll react until he's exposed to conditions there, but I personally wouldn't take the risk.

Yeah, lots of people that don't have allergies elsewhere develop them when they move here. My A/C is still running because it's been in the mid to upper 80s the last week or so. And I set my A/C at 78, which is rather high. While it doesn't get that cold here, you will probably be running your A/C from May-September (or October, in warmer years).

Living without AC in Texas is not an option. People literally die without AC in our hot summers!

Yes, this. I was born & raised here and never had allergies until I moved back from living in NYC for 5 years. Most people who relocate here tend to suffer from allergies regardless of whether they ever had before.

OP, sadly, I would nix the DFW area from your list for this reason. I don't know if Atlanta has allergy issues but it's another sunbelt city with a good economy and more mild climate than the northeast.

Would have to disagree with everyone on Dallas being bad for allergies. I'm very sensitive and Dallas is awesome

A/C is another story, that is a necessity in TX

My son got allergy shots starting at age nine and the regimen lasted four years. It really helped him.

I don't know if this is of any help, but :

Allergy Capitals (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America) : http://www.aafa.org/media/Spring-All...6-Rankings.pdf
State of the Air (American Lung Association) : City Rankings | American Lung Association

If you go by those 2 sites, Dallas probably isn't the greatest of choices, but I'm no expert.

My wife has allergies, she previous lived in Utah and Florida, and it is worse here for her than it was in the previous states. About once a year she goes to the doctor and gets an allergy shot, and it has made a huge difference for her.

Yes. I agree with most of the people here.

In Dallas, adults and kids everybody get allergies. So many people like me who never had allergies before get allergies when they move here.
