Every child is gifted in some way, what we need is to nurture and support all kids to reach their potential. Instead of issuing more visas, we need to cultivate these gifts of our own Asian American students.

That is true, and not every child's gift is academic.

That said, the kind of work ethic involved in producing those numbers is cultural and would be very difficult to duplicate in your typical american household. No matter what demographic that household is.

I dare say, the more the Asian community assimilates into American society the less distinctive their scores will become from other groups. Of course thats just a theory of mine and i wont live to see if that's a truth. Besides, who's to say they'll ever assimilate as a group ( at least to the extent of say, the Italians or Irish before them)

For now though, the proof is in the pudding.

You are right to some extent. However, I've seen academic culture of Asians and Jewish students benefiting their peers. In same manner, often they learn social skills and value of extracurriculars from their "local" peers. To be fair, every race has their own rainbow of IQ , EQ and talent in diffrent fields of life. In reality, all Americans are immmigrants, some new and some moved few generations ago. Even indigenous people moved around. All of us have that hunger to prove ourselves in our genes.

As a nation we need to start celebrating our academics, scientitists and scholars as much as we celebrate our athletes, actors, singers and politicians. Diversity is our asset, not a liability.

Wondering that is a one-way ticket to getting this thread shut down.

Chicken or the Egg ?

Do kids perform best because they attend "good" schools

Or do they perform best because the parental/family involvement in their academics/test prep is super strong (and concentrated at these schools) and the name bolted to the side of the building [ABC] High School is less important ?

If these same kids and families attended school in Decatur Texas (nothing against Decatur), then took the SAT, what would their scores be ? grossly different ?

....food for thought

I had a bunch of Asian friends at UT who all went to this crappy school in Houston.

3 of them didn't even speak English when they moved to this country.

They all aced the SAT.

I think their are many contributing factors and these two factors mentioned aren't mutually exclusive.

Trust me on this.......I get where you are coming from but don't assume, and frankly I'm not really implying you are but work with me a bit, all the kids earning law degrees, MBAs, MDs. Ph.Ds, MSes, wicked tough BS degrees and graduating at/near the top from all the great high schools around here over the next several weeks are all Asian.

I'm not Asian either but I stand in awe of the various Asian cultures who value education to the near exclusion of everything else.
