I am graduating from nursing school in Canada this year and would like to relocate to Texas. I heard that the base salary for a new RN at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas is about $43,000/year. Being from Canada, we don't have experience with paying for our healthcare so I need a bit of help figuring things out. What I'd like to know is: how much can I expect to pay for benefits each month? I am married with 2 young kids so I need to make sure I have enough coverage for the family (my husband won't be able to work under the visa I'll have). I'll need medical, dental and vision coverage.

We'd really love to move to Dallas but we need to know if we can afford to live on my salary alone. If anyone can even give me a good estimate of my take home pay assuming full-time day shifts, this would help alot

The hospital will have a health benefits plan and costs, you should contact them for specifics on that. The benefit cost will be taken directly out of your paycheck.

As a new grad, you'll probably be paid less than you will in a few years.

If you are trying to get a job at Presby Dallas it is best to go thru the nursing internship. They have them twice a year when nurses graduate. I believe the starting pay for new grads is between $18-22 + you get your shift differential. Presby Dallas also gives you a rate increase of approx 1.5-2.5 evety 6mths up to 3 years. I'm not forsure of the exact dollar amt, but I know forsure its within that range. The benefits are pretty good as well. Most people do well coming out of nursing school. If you are serious about going to PHD I would call the HR Dept. and speak to a nurse recruiter if possible.

You'll probably be working just for insurance. It's outrageous.

Highly doubt that. My mom's a nurse at Baylor University Medical Center and we've got plenty of family friends who are also nurses at Presbyterian, Medical City, etc. and all of them are doing more than fine. It seems like most nurses in DFW live in middle to upper-middle class homes in nice suburbs.

Nursing really is a great profession.

okay I spoke with my friend at Presby Dallas, She has been a nurse for a year. She has comfirmed nursing pay for newgrads are $19-$22/HR and you get a $2.00 increase every 6 months for 3 years. she stated she also received a cost of living increase, so for her first year at Presby her raise has been $6.05 She explained her shiff differential to me, that nurses receive on top of her hourly rate. Nurses do very well. She told me most nurses at Presby Dallas in her Dept thats single live in homes from $150,000 - $200,000 and most married couples live in houses that are approx $250,000 -$550,000. Also a lot of the nurses there are buying land in Royse City and having there homes built. They are contracting them out instead of through a builder. I would say nurses are doing very well and they are working for more than insurance benefits. I agree nursing is really a great profession and it takes a special person to be one. My friend is living proof.

I am an RN from Amarillo, but I've also been looking into moving to the Dallas area... The checking I've done thus far has resulted in pay/benefits that are very similar to what I am used to here in Amarillo... In which case, I can tell you that you will likely pay roughly $400 per month to cover an entire family with all the benefits you're wanting.

One way that I use to figure out my "take home" pay... (aka: what I'll have to live on!) is to take my base pay ie: 20.00 per hour X 36 hours per week (if you plan to work full time) X 4 (# of weeks per month) and then subtract roughly 25% off the total (this usually covers all taxes and benefits) I've found this to be pretty accurate, or to even err a bit on the side of caution! If you can live on the # you get... you're probably safe!

Good luck to you! It's always nice to welcome "newbies" to our field!!

Aside from this advice... I agree with those who suggested that you simply contact the HR office and ASK! Of course, THAT only works if you've actually secured a position!? If not, they're pretty "tight lipped" about it!
