Hello again!

One of the things that I am also thinking of as I consider leaving my hometown (in Chicago suburbs) to relocate to North Dallas (possibly McKinney) with my husband and 4 yr old is the proximity to the coast. My husband will not fly so vacations are difficult for us up here in the North. I know North Dallas is around a 5 hour drive to Galvenston. what are some other great things about living in North Texas in terms of vacationing...include family friendly spots in states to the east but still no more the a day away

Thanks again!

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a pretty good place, at about 5 hours drive from DFW. Also, try Eureka, AR.

Another 5 hour drive away is Palo Duro canyon in Amarillo. It is some incredibly beqautiful mountain scenery, albeit it is in a geometrically flat plain. But it is good, believe me. Caprock Canyons state park is a little closewr, and it's better, in my opinion.

Honestly, there are too many options to cover. For starters, Hot Springs in Arkansas is really nice and it is between 5 and 6 hours away. Memphis, TN is 7 hours away. New Orleans is 8 to 9 hours away. Central Texas and the Hill country is about 3 to 4 hours away depending on your specific destination. That is just to name a few. There are so many more options. Some even under 2 hours away.

A day's drive to the east will get you to the places previous posters mentioned in AR, TN, and LA (my parents live just outside of New Orleans and the crime is worse now than before Katrina, so my family stays out of there as much as possible! There are other bayou towns in LA with their own charm that are much safer). you can also get to MS to hear some delta blues. But TX is a huge state and really, a day's drive from Dallas won't get you as far as you might think. Too bad your dh won't fly. I'd go insane living here if it weren't for DFW International Airport to get me away from here for vacations.

If you consider a day's drive or less IN TX, you could explore the beautiful hill country of TX, Big Bend National Park, and South Padre (the beach there is nicer than Galveston IMO).

Dinosaur Valley state park is an interesting excursion 1-2 hours from DFW. The bed of the Paluxy river has dinosaur tracks embedded in the rocks, and the rest of the park is a beautiful and pristine slice of nature. There are some other attractions in the nearby town of Glen Rose, such as an African animal park where you drive thru and encounter lions, cheetahs, etc.

Austin is a fun town to visit with kids.

Port Aransas, TX is my choice for a beach vacation.

New Braunfels is in the same area, tubing on the Guadalupe is available there New Braunfels

New Braunfels also has a great waterpark Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort
