This is what you should do. Lakewood El is 1000x better than Sam Houston. I think it’s sad disd has parents tied in knots about where to send their kids- you live in Lakewood! It’s the best! Stop shopping around, the grass isn’t greener.

Just curious, do you have kids at Lakewood? Did you in the past? I have young kids and no one we know in Lakewood sends their kids there, even opting for Geneva Heights in some cases (plus other choice programs). After the scandal with the pedophile first grade teacher and the continued overcrowding...I just don't know if I can trust the wider reputation as "the best" when my anecdata shows that belief seems to be outdated.

For full disclosure of interests- we decidedly did not move to Lakewood when we moved from another neighborhood in East Dallas last year. I couldn't justify the risk of the school actually being good for the price tag that comes with Lakewood houses and we've been impressed with the transformation schools sending our older child to two different ones over the years.

Lakewood is the same as the rest of the northern DISD schools. People only say it's the best because it has a large holdout population of white kids that may or may not make it to Woodrow. They'll probably get yanked to a private school after 5th grade to avoid "the riffraff". Honestly, any school in the White, Woodrow, Hillcrest, Thomas Jefferson, Conrad, and Bryan Adams feeders will be fine for kiddos. Hexter, Withers, Lakewood, Mockingbird and Geneva are the same as the other DISD schools. They are only marked as "better than" because of the more white demographics. They're not bad, but the thing about them being better than others isn't really true. Maybe the PTA is a little more involved, but that usually happens with affluent demographics anyways, not really anything magical about the specific school.

No, I live west of Lakewood and my kids go to neighborhood schools there. But I’m good friends with the people who run the Lakewood PTA and clubs, etc. Lakewood is by far the best school for a dual income family. It’s the best for kids of multiple abilities and it’s the most stable in all of DISD. I am involved enough to counter all of this, but I don’t judge people who are honest and say that want a smoother path.

I did go to DISD schools, both Dealey and my neighborhood schools. Neighborhood schools are the way to go IMO. The academics are the same and I’d rather not drive my kids all over town doing “activities”, but I know that’s how some people measure their worth. Having your kids in separate schools is a poor choice in my eyes- you know that spending time commuting to and from school counteracts any benefits they get from being in an “accelerated” class (that isn’t really)? Many of my friends put their kids on buses to Dealey and Sudie- they are spinning their wheels.
