or Alabama for families. Are there any all-inclusive type resorts on the gulf??
Were looking for a place to drive to next March that has beaches, pools, golf, kids activities. I am looking for any suggestions for a driving trip (10 hrs max)
away from Dallas area.

thanks everyone!

Your not going to find much in the form of "all-inclusive" along the Gulf Coast. If you want to stay closer to home here are a few:
1. Galveston - there are a few places that are directly on the beach and not across the Seawall. We stay at the Seascape Condo's. A newer condo a bit further down the west is Escapes. In Galveston you have Moody Gardens and the new indoor Schlitterbahn water park.
2. Port Aransas - a good place to stay in this area is Port Royal.

Now, as for the Alabama coast - I love it very much. A lot of the smaller condos were sold and torn down after Ivan so I don't know all of the names. Your still not going to find much in the way of "all-inclusive". You will be able to find condos so that you can cook as many meals in as you want and stock the fridge w/ drinks. Along the Alabama coast you have: Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido Key.

I don't think there are ANY resorts in TX or Alabama that work like Mexico or a cruise ship environment
take a cruise--they have programs for kids that are supervised so parents can have time together

Ft Morgan ALabama has beautiful beaches...just returned from there. We rented a house (2nd row back...awesome views) and community pool etc...

While I don't think they have any ALL inclusive resorts they do have family resorts with pool etc...

Good rental companies there are...

Call the Sheraton at South Padre, they might have something. My niece worked at their kids camp a couple of summers ago. I don't know the details though. You might also want to ask yourself if you want to be AT South Padre during spring break because of all the college kids making it a drinking destination.

I've heard good things about this resort in San Antonio, it's real close to Sea World as well San Antonio Resorts, Luxury Texas Hotels - Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa

There's also Lost Pines: http://lostpines.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

great relaxing time for the entire family. They have family activities every day from sack races to segway tours. They have golf and water activities a plenty. Its in a relaxing setting in a small texas town. They also have condos so you can feel like you are on a get away retreat.

I would NOT take a family with children anywhere close to South Padre Island for Spring Break. What she said above is putting it mildly...SPI is FULL of rowdy, drunk college kids during Spring Break. Many of the big hotels take down anythin decorative because the kids will trash it or steal it... there are wet T-shirt contests on the beach, etc. It is NOT a "family-friendly" atmosphere during Spring Break!!!

I went to SPI once a month after spring break and pools were still "broken" at our hotel. It was over 10 yrs ago...can't remember which hotel.

same situation with beaches in Alabama filled with college kids getting drunk and stupid, doing stuff for video in dumb expectation that it will be their moment of fame--
how sad--and dangerous--there are kids who fall asleep on the beaches and wind up being run over at times...

and prices at the San Antonio resorts are going to be HIGH because there are plenty of families doing the same thing

you might check out the TX state park called Canyon of the Eagles--on Lake Buchannan
http://www.canyonoftheeagles.com/
just notice the disclaimer about the poisonous snakes and insects that have been seen on the park property...it is part of a nature preserve

check out the mention of Big Bend Park--sounds a little corny but it is beautiful country
USA:West, Spring Break Family Vacation Ideas .
the Guadalupe River Ranch is not cheap and it is really more for adults but there are dude ranches in the Kerrville area that might be interesting...

this one is in Bandera and has been around a long time
Mayan Ranch dining room 2

this is about San Antonio activities
you might consider renting a condo off VRBO

and this web posting of a family's spring break this year in SA area
Spring Break Texas Vacation - Trip Planner - Yahoo! Travel

there is plenty of stuff to do around Austin for a side trip

you could also consider going to Oklahoma state park--there are couple of nice ones not too far from Dallas
lake murray

The gulf isn't very pretty in those places, and the water is especially yucky around Galveston. Urgh. Tar ball and sea-weed anyone? Yuck.

I'd go east towards Alabama, or like someone else said, get on a boat.

Honestly, I think you'd probably be better off staying inland. The Hill Country is beautiful, and a lot less likely to be overrun with college kids than anywhere along the gulf.
