Young, single and moving to Dallas...
Based on that, (being young, well 35, and single), would Dallas seem like the place for me?
I am hopeful that it is, being that I have no baggage, I can deal with living just about anywhere, and I am very open to change. I'll be in Dallas as of January. It's a done deal. I live in LA currently, but I'm just ready for something different. I'm looking to get out on my own and date around a bit.
What are Texas guys like? LA is full of flaky, high maintenance people (yes, guys are high maintenance sometimes too!), and that is so not me. I am hoping that that Southern male stereotypes are true, that they're well mannered, hard-working, good guys. Is it? I'm sure it's not true all across the board, stereotypes never are.
Any advice for a young, single girl looking to get out there? Places to do, things to do, places to avoid, etc...?

hope you have work lined up
frankly there are probably just as many high-maintenance guys here--they maybe just don't have as high a profile...

And a lot of the eligible young men you will meet in Dallas are from....... California! If you'll take your time and look for a 'native', you may find a somewhat more down to earth guy. There are a lot of young people from the more rural areas of Texas who have had to relocate to Dallas to work, but they haven't left their small town family values behind them. Best wishes to you!

yea it is true. A lot of people are moving from ca to tx for lower cost of living. I'm going to have to say that TX guys are a hell of a lot more rowdy than CA guys. For sure. Once they get a hold of that alcohol, get ready.

There are high maintenance guys around here to be sure but I've found that it's a relatively small number of people in certain parts of town. Has never bothered me. However, I'll talk to anyone...I don't take it that just because someone doesn't jump out of his way to approach me that he's high maintenance or snobby.
Most guys from here have decent manners...they hold the door open for strangers, etc. I know I can open my own door but it's still just common courtesy if they arrive at the door first....that kind of stuff. Get used to being called "ma'am". It's not said to imply that you're old but rather because their mama's raised them right.
If you're interested in nightlife and living around other singles, then stay south of 635/LBJ in Uptown, downtown, off Greenville, some parts of East Dallas (though some parts are scary). Depends where you'll be working so Addison and further up the Dallas North Tollway off Frankford and Haverwood if you're shooting for an apartment aren't bad choices either. The suburbs are fine places to live and I would definitely live there if I wanted a house. Limited singles action in most of 'burbs.
If you're into sports, I'd look at joining a league for softball, flag football, etc. You don't have be all that good (I never was) but I met many of my friends either directly through the league or through friends I knew through those leagues. Big D Sports is run by friends of mine. Dallas Sport and Social is another group of leagues too. Meetup.com is also a way to find local people with similar interests.
There's no shortage of things to do here depending on your interests, of course. And while people complain about traffic here, it just doesn't compare to what I've experienced in LA traffic.
Good luck!
