My husband and I are moving to Dallas sometime in August. We are looking to rent somewhere near downtown. We would prefer a house, townhome, or condo over an apartment but are not really sure how to go about looking for a place that isn't mass-managed. Does anyone have any suggestions for resources for finding places like this? Our main issue is that we are looking now for a place to move into in August, and most of the places we have found are available currently.

The rental market is very different because homes tenants give a 30 day notice, so the inventory changes constantly. If you are looking for August occupancy, then you should start lookng 4-5 weeks before that.

Try Craigslist. The M-Street, Lower Greenville area has town homes and homes for rent. You might find some properties on Craigslist or just by driving around the neighborhoods since alot of property owners tend to just put lease signs out on their yard.

There's a great website mstreets.com that has alot of information on the mstreet area, lakewood, and other neighborhoods. I didn't see a lease search but the general information might be helpful.

I also found some lease listings on the ebby real estate company website. You might try there too.

Good luck!

I don't think any individual owner is going to sign you up for August, it's too far away and they can either get someone else in there or don't know if their current tenant will be leaving.

You can probably pre-lease an apartment from one of the bigger companies, but for properties that individuals own, you should look 60 days or less before your move in date.
