I just completed my masters degree in educational leadership and will seek a school level administrative position (assistant principal/principal) in the area. In looking at job postings on the DISD website I see that they have a salary range. In Jersey the administrative salary guide it takes 4 years to get to the top of the pay scale for that position. My questions are:

1) Do they have many openings in the DISD?

2) How many steps in the administrative salary schedule?

3) Will head coaching experience help?

4) Do they hire middle and high school administrative candidates who do not have teaching experience in those areas?

5) Would it be more advantageous for a relocatee to find an administrative position in the Dallas/Fort Worht/Plano schools, or the surrounding suburban area schools?

Thanks!

I do know that McKinney has several principals that do not have actual academic classroom experience.

Try checking out the websites for all area districts and throw your hat in the ring in as many as possible. You may have to take an intern position in some of them especially on the high school level. Most of the asst. principals & principals that I know of in the Garland ISD worked their way up thru the ranks starting w/ teaching then lower grade level schools before getting into the high school level.

MADLION7--different school districts have different pay scales--not a state scale but a state minimum that districts pad as their budgets allow...
check out the Region 11 web site--it has links to every school district in Region 11- Tarrant Co and surroundings districts---there is region for the Dallas area as well---
there is job posting board there that probably does not all all job openings in area districts--
finding an admin job coming from out of state will be difficult--most openings go to teachers in district who have taught and gotten their masters and know people who hire...

Sorry MOMOF2--but I can't believe that a principal has NO actual academic classroom experience--you can't apply for a Master's in Admin at UNT which is where many, many educators get their admin certificates w/o at least 2years in classroom and getting a job with that limited teaching experience means you have some pull somewhere......so don't know why a district would choose someone w/o classroom experience--think that would be a very bad choice from practical experience...

From what we saw in Milford, most of the area schools (Region 10) were on fairly similar payscales. You have to be close, just to be competitive.

Well it is true no matter what you want to believe. My sister teaches in the school district there and has been under a few that had NO academic classroom experience at all. Most were art or music teachers and came from out of state. So they ARE out there. It is not a plus in my book at all as I'd prefer a principal that actually did have academic classroom experience.

loves2read, here is the bio of one that has no academic classroom experience w/o their name.

1. "began her career in education in 1991 as a music specialist at ***** Elementary School in ******, Georgia. She was the music specialist at **** Middle School in *****, Georgia and at ***** Elementary School in *****, Georgia. In 1996 ***** served as the assistant principal at **** before moving to McKinney in 2001 to be the assistant principal at **** Elementary School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and her master’s of education degree from the University of Georgia."

well--she does have classroom experience even if it is an "elective" and not regular classroom w/reading, math, social studies, and science....she also has prior experience as an asst principal--so it is not like she was a newbie just out of college---the fact that she has had prior experience as administrator is the main deal---would you expect her to go back to being a music teacher at lower pay (and harder to find a job opening) because she moved from GA to TX (and probably because her husband was transferred instead of just moving on her own preference)???
That is not reasonable IMO

but I think that generally admins with more time in classroom are usually more effective--but not always--some were awful teachers and want into admin for more money and to get away from having responsibilities of classrooms and they are just as bad as admins as they were as teachers....don't think anyone should be allowed to get admin certification w/o at least 5 years in classroom--that seems to be big breaking point for teachers--if they last beyond 5 years most of them have a talent and calling for education...and are not using it as spring board into admin positions---right now there is big need for admins because so many older people retired in past few years amd population growth in N TX has caused so many new schools to be built--so it is much easier to get job and rise fairly quickly than it used to be 12-15 yrs ago...

I thought you meant someone had gotten education certificate and then MEd and went right into admin w/o ANY teaching experience...like some states offer a 6 yr program where you end up w/masters in ed w/only student teaching type of experience...
