I have been looking at RE in 75023 and like what I see: mature landscaping, older but not old houses, etc. When I mentioned it to my son, he asked his co-workers who are in the Dallas region (office is in west Plano) and they all were somewhat negative. Comments like, too many apartments, old and not kept up, look at Frisco and Mckinney, etc. I don't know them or their standards for what makes a good neighborhood, so I am asking you!

Almost every part of Plano, west of 75, is a nice, mature neighborhood. You're going to find apartments everywhere you go. Many people make suggestions like Frisco and McKinney because they don't like "older" homes and those are two newer cities with mostly newer homes.

If you like the 80's look, it's a very nice area of Plano... though I have no idea what price range you're talking about, so that might dictate what the co-workers are talking about too.

I don't know what my son is thinking, but I will be limited to probably $200K, depending on what I can sell my house for (not even ready for the market yet).

Where exactly in 75023 are you looking? My only comment is that houses could be right by Christie and Carpenter, so there would be a lot of traffic and riff-raff related to the schools. On the other hand, you're nice to some very nice walking/biking trails.

Nowhere in particular, just using various online sites to see what's available. Only getting a general idea of the housing/prices now. Hunter's Glen keeps coming up. I also don't like HOAs, part of the reason I like older housing.

SouthernBelleInUtah,

Generally in Plano the further east you go toward I-75 the least desirable it is. The further west you go toward the Tollway the more desirable. There is a pocket further west off of Park. It is in 75093 zip code. The specific area is north of Park, just east of Ohio. Try not to go west of Coit.

Park Blvd, Plano, TX 75093 - Google Maps

The homes are older but are being bought and renovated. I know of two people that live over there. Both are teachers and that was well within their budget. What they like is the location. Plenty of shopping at Preston and Park. In my opinion it is a nicer area.
Just my 2 cents.
I would also contact the Plano police department and have crime statistics pulled if you are considering a specific neighborhood. No matter where you look that is generally a good idea.
Good luck.
