potential relo to dallas - tell me about your fair city pls (Plano: cheap home, neighborhoods)

I'm an active member in a different town on CD - I'm interested to hear pros and cons about Dallas, about things to do (with 3 kids), education system, challenges, great things, what you love and what you could do without in Dallas.

We'd be coming from the hottest area in the country - North Carolina. We'd hate to leave it, but it means that hubby wouldn't travel 4-7 days a week anymore. I'd miss my friends dearly, but would be much closer to other friends in OK and TX.

I don't mean to sound rude, but it's probably better & easier for you to use the "search" function and search for schools, kids activities, etc and then come back and post with more specific questions.

I have 3 kids and my husband works out of state 4 days a week. Not to sound lazy, but I don't have the time, which is why I started this thread, hoping for some help and support. Thanks for your understanding. Anyone with kids will hopefully understand that 2 in diapers and one in school is hard enough to deal with and they will probably be able to spew off a lot more stuff than I can sift through - a whole lot faster and easier than me looking.

well, no, that's what the lists say. Now temperature ... I'm complaining about the 90s this week - but it's 100% humidity to boot. At least in Dallas it's a dry heat, isn't it?

It's already topped 100 a few times, will get much worse in July / August, and the humidity, while not as bad as NC, is still right up there.

your questions are mainly unanswerable without specifics. Dallas is not just one city. The "Dallas" that you're referring to is a collection of small towns, suburbs, and Dallas. Each has their own culture and pros/cons.

For instance, you talk about education systems. Should I talk about how the Wilmer-Hutchins school district got taken over by the state, or should I talk about the IB program?

Houses. Should i talk about how cheap homes are in Proper, or how expensive they are in Highland Park.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but we're all busy. We're all willing to help you, but you'd be better off coming back with more specific questions.

Seriously?! Do you think we all sit around eating bon-bond all day, anxiously awaiting the next CD posting? I run a $300M division of my company- and I help people on CD in my spare time because I love Dallas and want people to find what they are seeking here.

So tell us where the job is located, what kind of schools you're lookig fore (private, public, special needs, AP/ TAG), what a reasonable commute in minutes is to you, and what your housing budget is. Then we can provide substantial info to you.

It's no help for me to tell you about the schools in Lakewood or Plano if your hubby's job is near Alliance Airport, 40 miles (and a nearly 2 hour commute) away.

This is not a small town. It is a 9,000 square mile metroplex with probably 100 towns/cities/suburbs and thousands of neighborhoods. Dozens and dozens of independent school districts.
