Howdy All,

My family might be moving to Dallas from central Missouri due to husband's job. Commute is not an issue as much of his work can be done at home or involves travel to surrounding region. Just need to live within 45-60 minutes of Dallas. Are there any recommendations for smaller cities/towns other than the Dallas suburbs? Perhaps population of 50,000 or less (even down into the 15-20,000 range is okay). I am not opposed to burbs but would like a larger yard, smaller town vibe. Need a decent school system as we have two middle school age kids. Son (12) plays competitive soccer so would like to find a team for him. I might be asking too much; if so, then recommend options within Dallas proper or burbs. I like established neighborhoods with trees, kids that can ride bikes and walk safely, people who actually get to know neighbors! I am a friendly Midwestern gal who is nervous about this move. I am not a Texan but I adore Lyle Lovett---will that help me fit in? HA!

For both smaller town and good schools close to Dallas, I would say....
Parker, Lucas, Wyle, Murphy.
Rowlett maybe. Sunnyvale

And yes what is your price!

Sunnyvale is a small community that is close to Dallas. Most of the homes sit on very large lots and the schools are very small. The new highschool, new middle school and elementary are within a stones throw from each other. During non-rush hour you could be in Dallas within 30 minutes. It has a very small time feel but is very close to Dallas.

You'll find a lot of places that fit your needs with a $350K budget.

I hate to say it, but visit and see if you want to be closer to North, South, East, or West Dallas.

Because you can go in all directions and find what you are looking for.

I agree 350k is a pretty big budget here. Come and visit and drive around, see the schools and see the towns etc... how close shopping is, resturants etc...

I love the Parker & Lucas area...but have also heard Sunnyvale is very nice and has very good schools. (just never been there!)

Good luck!

we moved to Wylie about a year ago from downtown Dallas...great schools...super nice people...housing is well within your budget. And, it's right by Lake Lavon!

Here in Lakewood, it's a small town in the big city. We have no need to leave the area. It might be suitable for you - $350 is a bit on the lower side here but we have a mix of everything - just like a small town.

My wife and I moved to Wylie in Nov. 09 and like it a lot, just about everything you said you wanted in your original post. Small town (less than 50k pop), has a historic style main st (Ballard St.), good school system, kids can ride their bikes and enjoy parks (And Lake Lavon!), neighbors are friendly (At least they are in our subdivision and I've heard that they are in other subdivisions too), etc.

Not only that, but $350k gets you a ridiculous amount in Wylie. We spent $210k in Nov 09 and got a 6 bedroom, 3.5 bath house with 3700 sq. ft that was built in 2005. No need to even spend close to $350k in Wylie (but you could in theory).

My wife is also from Central Missouri (Warrensburg area, in fact we got married in Warrensburg) and she likes it, says it feels like MO but better.
