Purpose of this thread: What do you think is the most valuable current asset bringing people downtown for the purpose of LIVING. And what do you think could really attract alot of people to move downtown? Just would love to hear some thoughts...

Just being able to get away from Vandalia-Butler would be incentive enough, I'd think... (Sorry, Nick; just couldn't rsesist that one...)

I think Dayton is already on the right track. Great projects have happened already, lots of new ideas are coming in which is something you NEED, and projects like Tech Town will continue to bring in more people and ideas. Give it time...

Tax abatements are a lot easier said than done. How does the Oregon District look trashy. It has an urban feel to it, which really adds to its character? Not saying you are implying this, but why do most people expect the city to look like cookie-cutter suburbs...

Yeah I don't think Oregon looks bad...the facade of some buidlings could use a coat of paint and that one sex shop could re-do the front, but besides that Oregon is very clean and fresh, and the residential neighborhood itself is quite unique and stunning too. I agree that you might be looking for a suburban look.

Based on what Johnbell33 said, I'd guess he is looking for a suburban feel in the city. Uh, we already have many nice suburbs AND The Greene - if that is what you're looking for, then go there. ALL successful cities have a grittiness and edginess to them. There are two porn shops in all of downtown (both on Fifth) - so what? Nobody is forcing you to go inside, and neither is racy from the outside. (and let's face it, there are plenty of suburbanites shopping at those places, otherwise they wouldn't be in business).

As for tax abatements and school vouchers - those already exist.

I've noticed that the momentum is picking up for downtown. But are there any new projects on tap? I know they dropped Ballpark Village but is Deed's Point, River's Edge, the building by the pallpark(is that Mercantile building??) and that China Town still in the works?
