I'm relocating to the Dayton (WPAFB) area--probably Beavercreek or Centerville, but that's still TBD. The thing is, I'm used to living by the water, so not being able to see/hear/touch/walk to/read my book near a large body of water on a regular basis is going to drive me utterly insane. So, to head off the insanity...

Where are your favorite scenic water spots in the Dayton area? I know there are various parks, rivers, lakes around but it's been a long time since I've lived in the area. I'm looking for places I can get to quickly/regularly to sit and read my book or go for a walk, but also for places not excessively far off that I can escape to on a weekend. Suggestions? Favorites? Doesn't have to be big, but moving water beats still water imo (mosquitoes love me).

Thanks in advance!

I know you don't like "still" water, but the ponds at Lincoln Park and Indian Riffle Park in Kettering are two that I like.

John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs is where I'd go if I was you:

The Little Miami River runs through it. Beautiful park! Bit of a drive though.

If you want to live in a place where you could just walk out and be by the water any time you want, then I'd look into Shawnee Lakes by Jamestown instead of Beavercreek or Centerville. Or possibly Carriage Trails by Tipp City with its ponds might be an appropriate substitute, but it is still water.

Additionally, a number of places along the Great Miami River take advantage of its beauty and recreational potential for kayaking, canoeing, etc. Tipp City/Troy might be worth a look, as would be downtown Dayton and Miamisburg.

Good luck!

My preference is Caesarcreek Reservoir, or "lake". It's around 2000-3000 acres, south-east of Dayton. There's even a makeshift beach. A bit further afield is C J Brown Reservoir, north-east of Dayton. Also a manmade lake, it's comparable in size to Caesarcreek.

One of my favorite places is Huffman Dam. You can park by the lake, and see almost the whole area. We've seen quite a few different waterfowl there.

Lake Erie is only 3 hours away! I've done it in a day trip when I was hankering for the water.

I like Huffman Dam, too. Another nice spot in the region is Cowan Lake, near Wilmington. Very peaceful there. Another nice park, a little farther away, Deer Creek State Park, out U.S. 35 east of Jeffersonville.
