What about Hockessin?

I was told you pronounce it Hoe-ka-sin - is that correct?

I believe Newark, DE was originally "New Ark" before it became a compound word -- hence it retained the original logical pronunciation.

Lewes is the name of a city in the South of England, and if you realise that, you would probably realise it couldn't be pronounced "Loos" (which would be the plural of a popular term for the toilet).

I love recommending to people visiting Lewis to be sure to stop and visit the Zwaanendael Museum. Trouble is I don't know how to pronounce it.

Can anyone tell me the correct pronounciation of "Zwaanendael"? Just spelling it is a challange for me.

I assume the w is pronounced as a v, and the double aa is a broad "a" sound as in father. Not sure about the vowels of the final syllable. So my own attempt comes out pretty much as Zva-nen-del. The name, as you may know, refers to "swans" seen in the area by the Dutch settlers. I wonder if these "swans" weren't instead snow geese.

How about Leipsic?

I always pronounced it LI-psic but an announcer on TV (native Delawarean??) pronounced it LEE-psic. He said the riverfront town was named after the German city of the same spelling and that is how I arrived at my version. Does anyone know the correct or accepted pronounciation?
