What's the deal with the Kirby Holloway restaurant burning down? I don't recognize the name (not that I know everything Delaware) how popular was it? It's been a big news story even on the Philly news.

Yep, it was our old stomping grounds when you weren't even thought of!
In the 50's it was the only place to get a burger, either that place or the Dairy Sweet in Smyrna. Sonic tried to take a page out of Kirby & Holloway's book, and have their servers skate to cars. That was a novel idea in the 50's and a dream job! They only hired teen age girls who were cute in those days. It's a shame because they will have to completely build over, but it can't be duplicated.

It sounds like an awesome place, shame it caught fire. Are they talking about rebuilding it?

Yes, they will rebuild. Location is on Rt. 13.
South on Rt. 13, pass State Street Intersection, and it's on the right.

When I read the title to this thread I must admit I thought James420 had some bad news about rldr. Whew!
I'm glad it was just a restaurant burning down.
You can rebuild restaurants.

My husband and I moved here recently and wanted to see how the food was at the restaurant. We had family here for Superbowl and went there Saturday morning for breakfast. Saturday night, coming home from Dover Downs, it was on fire. Unbelievable. But I'm glad we were able to get there, it was a great experience.

I seem to have missed going to that place on my previous trips to the Dover area. I ate at the Hollywood Diner and liked that - love old diner-type places. Anyway, I am going to Delaware next month and picked up the travel book at AAA today and the restaurant was listed in there with a good write-up. Sorry I missed going there.

This forum would not be the same without rdlr - otherwise known as Delly. I believe she could put out a newsletter with all the things to see and do in Kent County.

It may been big news on the Phila station but this follow up is strictly lower Delaware. Dover funds bolsters stricken restaurant staff .A group has been formed to help the restaurant employees. Since the fire they have raised close to $10,000 and have distributed the first $150 check to each employee.

This is what sets Delaware apart from most states. People care about one another and we are close knit.
